Modica Gears Up for Fencing Festivities adn Ministerial Visit
Modica is preparing to welcome Minister of Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, on December 28th, 2024, for a day dedicated to celebrating the city’s renowned fencing tradition.Mayor maria Monisteri announced the visit, highlighting its importance for Modica.
“This is a momentous occasion for our city,” stated Monisteri. “We will be honoring Modica Fencing, a local institution celebrated globally, as it marks its 40th anniversary. This milestone coincides with the remarkable achievement of one of their students, Giorgio avola, who secured Olympic gold in London 2012.”
Minister abodi’s itinerary includes a visit to the PalaScherma at 12:30 pm,where he will assess the progress of ongoing renovation and expansion projects. Following this, he will engage in a private meeting with mayors and administrators from the twelve municipalities within the Ragusa province at palazzo San Domenico.
The afternoon will culminate in a series of events at the Castello dei Conti. At 3 pm, Minister Abodi will attend the closing ceremony of the complimentary 2024 school course. Subsequently, at 4:30 pm, the Castello dei conti will host the official 40th-anniversary celebration of Modica Fencing, featuring an address by Minister Abodi.

Giorgio: It’s incredibly meaningful. Modica Fencing has been a bedrock in my life, shaping me both as an athlete and a person. To see their dedication to the sport recognized on such a grand scale, and knowing my victory contributed to that recognition, fills me with immense pride.
Minister Abodi’s upcoming visit is a testament to the impact of Modica Fencing. What do you think his visit signifies for the future of fencing in the region?
Giorgio: It’s a fantastic opportunity to highlight Modica Fencing’s contributions and attract greater investment in the sport. the minister’s interest signifies that fencing is viewed as a vital part of the sporting landscape, not just in Modica, but throughout the Ragusa province.
Speaking of investment,the article mentions renovations and expansion projects at PalaScherma. How important are these improvements for nurturing future generations of fencers?
Giorgio: Absolutely crucial. We need world-class facilities to attract and train young talent. Modern equipment, expanded training spaces, these are investments that pay dividends in the form of future champions.
Do you think Modica Fencing’s approach of offering complimentary school courses is beneficial in fostering a love for the sport among young people?
Giorgio: Absolutely. Fencing can be an expensive sport, so making it accessible through free courses opens doors for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity. It’s about planting the seed and nurturing a passion for the sport.
We’ve seen modica Fencing produce champions like yourself. what qualities do you think contribute to the success of this institution?
Giorgio: It’s a combination of factors: dedicated coaching,a supportive community,and a strong sense of tradition. Modica Fencing has a proven track record of developing talent, and that legacy inspires each new generation to strive for excellence.
