From Montebelluna to Mujwa: A Christmas Gift of Hope
This holiday season, a heartwarming story connects the italian city of Montebelluna with the Kenyan village of Mujwa, united by the universal language of basketball.
In the 1980s, Montebelluna’s sporting scene was electrified by the Nordic basketball team. This powerhouse club, led by the visionary president Daniele Schiavinato, nearly reached Serie A in 1983, captivating fans with their thrilling performances. Talented players like Andrea Grace, Roberto Premier, and Max Borghetto graced the court, etching their names in Montebelluna’s basketball history.
Schiavinato, though, embarked on a new journey, driven by a profound desire to help those in need. He left behind the roar of the crowd and the thrill of victory to dedicate himself to a cause far greater than sport. In 1987, he established the Volunteer Association insieme (Avi) in mujwa, Kenya, an area served by the Consolata missionaries and his brother, Father Pierino.
Leveraging his entrepreneurial expertise in the furniture industry, Schiavinato revitalized a carpentry workshop, providing vocational training and opportunities for underprivileged youth. he also founded the St. Patrick Children’s Home, a haven for orphaned children, offering them love, care, and a chance at a brighter future.
Schiavinato’s unwavering commitment has deeply touched the hearts of many in Treviso, who have supported his endeavors over the years. Some have even traveled to Mujwa to lend a hand or share their professional skills.
This Christmas,a special gift is being prepared for the children of Mujwa. Avi, in collaboration with Pallacanestro Montebelluna, spearheaded by Oscar Lucati, is raising funds to build a multi-purpose concrete platform at the st. Patrick Children’s Home. This space will serve as a hub for sports and recreation, fostering camaraderie and healthy growth.
Francesco Tartini, Avi’s current president, emphasizes the profound impact Schiavinato has had on both the sporting and volunteer communities in Montebelluna. “He inspired us with his dedication to youth and his belief in the power of sport to uplift and unite,” Tartini remarked.
The project requires €10,000 to materialize, but additional contributions could provide uniforms, shoes, balls, and essential equipment. Those wishing to contribute to this inspiring initiative can find more data on Avi’s Facebook page. This Christmas, let’s join hands to bring the joy of sport and the spirit of giving to the children of Mujwa.
From Court to community: A Conversation on Sports, Charity, and Second Chances
We often see athletes reach the pinnacle of success, their names etched in history books and their faces plastered on billboards. But what happens when the roar of the crowd fades, and the lights dim? For some, the pursuit of athletic glory gives way to a calling far greater than sport – a desire to give back and uplift those less blessed. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with former professional basketball player, Maria Rodriguez, who’s dedicated her life to just that. Maria, welcome to the show.
Maria Rodriguez: Thank you for having me!
Moderator: Maria, you’ve had a storied career, playing at the highest level of the game. But your post-retirement journey has taken a interesting turn. You’ve become deeply involved with the Volunteer Association insieme (Avi) in Mujwa,Kenya. What sparked this passion for community work, especially in a place so far removed from your basketball roots?
Maria Rodriguez: You know, early in my career, I felt a sense of disconnect. While I was achieving my dreams on the court, I couldn’t shake this feeling that something was missing. Then,I met Daniele Schiavinato,a true visionary. His story of leaving professional success behind to build a better future for children in Kenya deeply resonated with me. It opened my eyes to the power of sport, not just as a form of entertainment, but as a tool for social change.
Moderator: Daniele’s story is truly inspiring. Leaving behind a successful basketball career to focus on community advancement in Mujwa is a testament to his commitment. Avi’s current project, building a multi-purpose sports platform at the St. Patrick Children’s Home, seems like a natural extension of this mission.
Maria Rodriguez: Absolutely! Sport has the incredible ability to unite peopel. Regardless of background or circumstance, it creates a level playing field where everyone can learn, compete, and grow. A dedicated space for sports and recreation at the children’s home woudl be transformative.
Moderator: I couldn’t agree more. The platform would not only provide a space for physical activity but also foster a sense of community and belonging. Do you believe that experiences like this can truly change the lives of these children?
Maria Rodriguez: Without a doubt. Access to sport can teach valuable life skills, from teamwork and discipline to leadership and resilience. It can provide a sense of hope and purpose, breaking cycles of poverty and despair.Just imagine the joy these children will experience when they have a safe and dedicated space to play and flourish.
Moderator: It’s heartwarming to see this type of initiative gain traction, especially during the holiday season.Avi’s fundraising efforts are admirable, with the goal of raising €10,000 to make this project a reality. What message would you send to those considering donating?
Maria Rodriguez: Every contribution,no matter how big or small, makes a difference. Think about the impact even a small donation could have on the lives of these children. It’s an investment in their future, and in a brighter future for Mujwa.
Moderator: Wise words, Maria. This project truly embodies the spirit of giving.
