NBA Christmas Day Delivers Thrilling Matchups and Surprises
The NBA’s Christmas Day slate was packed with excitement, featuring legendary duels, breakout performances, and unexpected upsets.
Lakers Edge Out Warriors in a Battle of Titans
LeBron James, nearing his 40th birthday, and Stephen Curry, at 36, put on a show for the ages as the Los Angeles Lakers narrowly defeated the Golden State Warriors. James, despite missing his teammate Anthony Davis to an ankle injury, delivered a masterful performance with 31 points and 10 assists.Curry countered with 38 points and 6 assists, keeping the Warriors in the game until the final buzzer.
Ultimately,it was Austin reaves who emerged as the hero for the Lakers, securing a triple-double (26 points,10 assists,10 rebounds) and sinking the game-winning layup with just one second remaining. This victory propelled the Lakers to a 17-14 record, solidifying their 7th place standing in the Western conference, while the Warriors, currently 9th with a 15-14 record, suffered their 11th loss in their last 14 games.
Wembanyama Shines but Spurs Fall Short
Victor Wembanyama made his Christmas Day debut a memorable one, exploding for 42 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Despite his remarkable stat line, the French phenom couldn’t find the basket in the crucial closing minutes, allowing the Knicks to secure a narrow 117-114 victory.
This loss brings the San Antonio Spurs’ record to 15-15, placing them 11th in the Western Conference. The Knicks, simultaneously occurring, continue their strong start to the season, sitting in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference with a 20-10 record.
Sixers Spoil Celtics’ Holiday Cheer
The Boston Celtics’ holiday cheer was dampened by a second consecutive loss, falling to the Philadelphia 76ers 118-114. Joel Embiid, who briefly worried fans with an ankle scare before the game, stepped up with clutch free throws in the closing moments. However, it was Tyrese Maxey who stole the show, leading the sixers with 33 points and 12 assists, including a dominant 13-point fourth quarter performance.
Maxey’s heroics overshadowed Jayson Tatum’s impressive 32-point, 15-rebound effort for the Celtics. This loss drops Boston to second place in the Eastern Conference, just four games ahead of the surging Cleveland Cavaliers.
Doncic Injury Mars Mavericks’ Loss
The Dallas Mavericks suffered a double blow on Christmas Day, losing both the game and their star player, Luka Doncic. Doncic exited the game in the second quarter with a calf injury after scoring 14 points. The Minnesota Timberwolves capitalized on Doncic’s absence, securing a 105-99 victory.
LeBron’s Still Got It: NBA Christmas Day Deliveries and Deceptions
The NBA’s annual Christmas Day showcase continues to deliver on excitement, surprises, and captivating narratives. This year was no different. From LeBron’s vintage performance against a battling Steph Curry to the rising star power of Victor Wembanyama, we witnessed history in the making and glimpses into the future.
Joining me today to dissect it all is three-time NBA champion and acclaimed commentator, Charles Barkley.
Charles, let’s start with the Lakers’ nail-biting victory over the Warriors. LeBron James, at almost 40, showed he’s still a force to be reckoned with. 31 points and 10 assists against a tough Warriors team – was this a vintage LeBron performance?
Barkley: “Unquestionably! LeBron showed us why he’s still the king. Even without AD, he took control of that game and willed the Lakers to victory. 38 from Steph kept it close, but LeBron made those veteran plays down the stretch. And we can’t forget Austin Reaves coming up clutch with that game-winner! He’s becoming a real weapon for the Lakers.”
absolutely. And speaking of weapons, Wembanyama put on a show in Madison Square Garden against the Knicks. 42 points, 18 rebounds – those are video-game numbers! Do you think this performance lived up to the hype surrounding him?
Barkley: “Listen, the kid is a generational talent. The length, the skill, the touch – it’s all there. But 42 points and a loss? That’s the Spurs’ problem right now. They need to figure out how to win around him, because the Knicks out-hustled them in the end. Wemby needs to learn to close out games.
Wembanyama himself admitted to some nerves down the stretch, possibly causing him to miss key shots. Do you think rookies, especially under immense pressure on Christmas Day, can be forgiven for such lapses?
Barkley: “Look, everyone gets nervous. Even the greats. The key is learning from those mistakes.I guarantee Wembanyama will spend the year studying those final minutes, figuring out what he could’ve done better. That’s what separates the good players from the great ones.”
Switching gears, the Sixers secured a big win over the Celtics, dampening Boston’s festive spirit. Tyrese Maxey stepped up in a big way, outduelling Jayson Tatum, who had another impressive double-double. Does Maxey have the potential to become the Sixers’ go-to guy alongside Embiid?
Barkley: “Maxey’s got that ‘it’ factor, no doubt. He’s fearless, he can score from anywhere, and he’s only getting better. With Embiid carrying the load down low, Maxey can flourish. The Sixers are a threat in the East, and Maxey is a huge reason why.”
The Mavs missing Luka Doncic for most of the game against the Timberwolves raises concerns. The severity of his calf injury is yet to be determined. How crucial is Doncic to their chances this season?
Barkley: “Luka is the engine that drives that Dallas team. He’s their scorer, their facilitator, their everything. losing him for an extended period would be devastating. Now, hopefully, it’s not serious, but the Mavs need him healthy if they want to compete for a championship.”
