Shock trade makes Dennis Schröder’s son overjoyed

World champion Dennis Schröder loves San Francisco and can imagine staying with the Golden State Warriors longer. But he also knows the NBA business. His son is blown away.

When Dennis Schröder walks the streets of San Francisco, he feels at home. “When you walk around, it looks like Europe, like Berlin. With the trains on the street, like here,” said the Golden State Warriors’ newcomer when he was introduced. He has “always loved the city” and there is even “a shop with German sweets.” The question remains how long he will be allowed to play there.

It has been clear since Sunday that the NBA world champion will no longer play for the Brooklyn Nets. The call hit him. “When my agent called me, I was shocked,” said Schröder: “I liked the situation in Brooklyn. We had just moved into a house and unpacked everything.” But now the whole family is happy. “Hopefully they’ll get over before Christmas.”

A lot is changing again for his wife Ellen and their three children, and of course for Schröder himself. For example, his shirt number. The traditional 17 is not available because the Warriors retired it in honor of Chris Mullin. “I have an emotional connection to 17. It was my father’s favorite number,” said Schröder. He was also the 17th pick in the draft and is therefore switching to 71: “I’ll stick with it and turn the numbers around.”

Schröder and son are thrilled

The basketball star is scheduled to make his debut with the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. The 31-year-old really likes the fact that he can now play for the Warriors: “I’m happy to be part of this organization. I’ve always had respect for Golden State.” Coach Steve Kerr is “a legend, as a player and coach,” and Stephen Curry is “perhaps the best point guard of all time. I’ve played with a lot of future Hall-of-Famers. With him I complete it in a way. I’m thrilled “To be here.”

Schröder’s eldest is at least as enthusiastic. “My son always asked for his jersey. I tried for three or four years. But I couldn’t get it,” said the national team captain. At the last game in San Francisco he received it from Curry. Dennis Malick Jr. is “a big fan. He watches every game.” The five-year-old said about the change: “At least it’s a good team.”

That wasn’t always the case. For example, not with the Nets, who also gave him up because he made the team too strong and thus endangered an early draft pick. Schröder is moving in North America for the eighth time. Basically, it doesn’t matter to him whether I stay in one place. I want to be where I’m really appreciated. Where people appreciate my value,” he emphasized: “If it works, I want to end my career here. But I I know the business. I have no problem with them having different visions.”
