Between 1975 and 2023, Bill Belichick was around the National Football League – initially in assistant jobs with the Baltimore Colts, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets. And then as head coach of the Cleveland Browns (1991 to 1995) and the New England Patriots (2000 to 2023).

It was in Foxborough, Massachusetts, near the metropolis of Boston, that the now 72-year-old guarantee of success, whose full name is William Stephen Belichick, became the greatest coach of the NFL’s modern era. Alongside quarterback legend Tom Brady.

Together, the two of them won 17 (!) victories with the Patriots in their own AFC East division, made it to the playoffs 18 times, won the AFC title nine times (!) and won six times (!) in nine participations Super Bowl. And even if the end of the Belichick era was rather inglorious after Brady’s farewell, it was not surprising that since his Pats exit at the beginning of January 2024 (linebackers coach Jerod Mayo took over), his name was immediately linked to potential commitments to other NFL teams was associated.

$30 million and a vision for the future

Always mentioned: the Jacksonville Jaguars or the New York Giants. It became the North Carolina Tar Heels. You read that right.

Belichick has decided against returning to the NFL and opting for a college commitment. The US media reports this unanimously – including, for example ESPN. The most successful NFL coach of all time in terms of Super Bowl victories, who, in addition to his six titles with New England, also won two with the Giants as defensive coordinator, is expected to receive a three-year contract and will receive $30 million during this period.

Possible background: His father Steve Belichick worked for the Tar Heels as an assistant coach in the 1950s. And offspring Bill recently explained on the “Pat McAfee Show”: “The college program would provide a pipeline to the NFL for the players who have what it takes to play in the NFL. It would be a professional program with training , nutrition, scheme, coaching and techniques that could be transferred to the NFL.”

Hoodie lover Belichick, whose family is of Croatian descent (Bilicic), now wants to make this attractive-sounding plan come true – and will probably finally sacrifice the chance of a perhaps eternal NFL record. Belichick left the Patriots at the beginning of 2024 with a record of 333 games won in the National Football League. Only legend Don Shula has more (347 – two Super Bowl wins with the Miami Dolphins).
