At 28 years old, Matteo Berrettini has already experienced many ups and downs in his ATP career. Due to injuries, the Italian is no longer a serious threat to the top tennis stars, especially at Wimbledon.
However, he has been feeling better and better on the pitch recently. In fact, he was an important part of Italy’s victory at the 2024 Davis Cup. His efforts were even rewarded with a nomination for Breakthrough Player of the Year, alongside Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic.
Now Berrettini has made headlines after revealing who his favorite tennis player was as a child when Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer competed against each other. “My brother (Jacopo Berrettini) always chose [Novak] Djokovic and I for Roger [Federer]” he revealed in a report by The Tennis Gazette.
“We played for hours at home, with balloons, with small rackets, with big rackets, it didn’t matter, we just had fun. We didn’t get off to the right start, but luckily we were able to change that,” Berrettini added.
It is normal that Matteo Berrettini feels that he is the most like Roger Federer. Both of them’s favorite surface is grass. Thanks to Carlos Alcaraz’s victories in the last two editions of Wimbledon (2023 and 2024), Federer remains the player with the most titles at the All England Club in history with 8 titles. Djokovic remains at 7.
Coming back to Matteo Berrettini, the Italian is the third tennis player in 2024 to have won the most titles. With victories in Morocco, Switzerland and Austria, the Italian is only surpassed by his compatriot and world number one Jannik Sinner and the aforementioned Carlos Alcaraz. In addition, Berrettini rose to number 34 in the ATP rankings at the end of the year.
