Olympic Bronze Fuels Garrigós’ Judo Journey
Spanish judoka Fran Garrigós, fresh off his bronze medal victory at the paris 2024 Olympic Games, feels a newfound sense of security. This achievement, he says, grants him the peace of mind to fully dedicate himself to his sport for the foreseeable future.
“Securing a medal at the Olympics or World Championships is crucial for receiving support, as funding is tied to the yearS most significant event,” Garrigós explained to Europa press at the Silvestre Prize ceremony. “Now, I have the privilege of focusing entirely on judo for several years. While I’m not a professional footballer, I believe that pursuing your passion is a blessing.”
However, Garrigós advocates for a more comprehensive approach to athlete support. He believes that aid should encompass the entire competitive season, not just the pinnacle events.
“There’s a risk of missing out on crucial support if you have a setback at the major championship, even if you’ve excelled in othre tournaments throughout the year,” he emphasized. “Imagine winning every competition leading up to the World Championships, only to lose in the frist round. That could mean losing out on vital funding.”
Garrigós, the reigning European champion, highlights the reliance many athletes have on scholarships. “Guaranteed financial support alleviates pressure and allows athletes to focus solely on their performance. It could significantly improve results,” he stated. He also commended the ‘Team Spain’ programme, initiated by the Higher Sports Council (CSD), for its efforts in promoting athletes and sports in general.
Reflecting on 2024, Garrigós considers it a remarkable year. “Becoming European champion and winning an Olympic bronze medal is an incredible accomplishment,” he shared. “While I aimed for a higher medal color at the Olympics, I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work that led to these achievements.”
For Garrigós, the Olympic medal validates the sacrifices made. “It’s not just about the result; it’s about giving your all every day,” he explained. “knowing you’ve left everything on the mat, regardless of the outcome, is immensely satisfying. It’s crucial to strive towards your goals and remain committed to your aspirations.”
While acknowledging the newfound respect from competitors, Garrigós remains grounded. “The medal doesn’t guarantee future success; continuous training is essential to maintain a top position,” he cautioned.
Looking ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Garrigós sees ample room for improvement.”Daily training with fresh goals and unwavering enthusiasm is key,” he stated. “my experience on the mat has grown, which is invaluable. While some physical attributes may decline with age, my eagerness to progress and qualify for the next Olympics remains strong.”
Garrigós hopes 2025 will be a year of accomplishment, with his sights set on the European and World Championships.
”The Bronze is Just the Beginning”: An interview with Olympic Judoka Fran Garrigós
Welcome back, sports fans!
Today, we’re thrilled to be joined by the bronze medalist of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and reigning European Judo Champion, Fran Garrigós.Fran, congratulations on your amazing achievements this year!
Fran: Thank you! Its been an amazing journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for all the support.
You’ve spoken about how your Olympic bronze medal provides a sense of security and allows you to focus solely on judo for the foreseeable future. Can you elaborate on that?
Fran: Absolutely. Before the Olympics, there’s always a bit of uncertainty regarding funding. Medal performances at major events like the olympics and World Championships are crucial for securing sponsorship and support. Now, with the bronze secured, I have the financial stability to dedicate myself entirely to training and competing without worrying about the financial implications.
I fully understand. Speaking of funding, you’ve also advocated for a more comprehensive approach to athlete support, going beyond just medal-centric funding.
fran: Exactly. While achieving at major championships is vital,I beleive consistent performance throughout the year should also be recognized. A system that provides support throughout the season, not just around specific events, would alleviate a lot of stress for athletes and allow them to focus on improving. Imagine winning all your lead-up tournaments but potentially losing early at the World Championships. you risk losing out on crucial funding that could have helped you perform even better. It’s a precarious situation.
That’s a compelling argument. Do you think increased support could lead to even better results for athletes like yourself?
Fran: I strongly believe so. When athletes don’t have to constantly worry about finances, thay can dedicate more time and energy to training, nutrition, and recovery. This leads to better performance and ultimately, better results for the entire nation.
Programs like ”team Spain” aim to promote athletes and sports in general. What are your thoughts on initiatives like this?
Fran: ”Team Spain” is a fantastic programme. it’s great to see the Higher Sports Council investing in promoting sports and supporting athletes. Programs like this are vital for the future of Spanish sport.
Let’s talk about your remarkable 2024. European champion and Olympic bronze medalist – that’s a year to remember! How do you reflect on your achievements?
Fran: It’s been an incredible year, filled with hard work, dedication, and ultimately, success. While I aimed for gold in Paris, the bronze is a testament to the effort I’ve put in. It’s a privilege to represent my country on this stage.
Winning a medal at the Olympics, even bronze,is a massive accomplishment. How has it impacted your life and the way other judoka view you?
Fran: it’s definitely brought a new level of respect from my competitors. But the most crucial impact has been the validation of all the sacrifices I’ve made.
You mentioned sacrifices. What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome on your journey to the Olympics?
Fran: The biggest hurdle for me wasn’t physical; it was mental. It’s about maintaining focus, staying motivated, and believing in yourself, especially during those tough training sessions when all you want to do is give up.
Solid point. Now, looking ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, how are you preparing?
Fran:
I’m incredibly focused on continuing to grow as an athlete. I’m training hard every day, setting new goals, and learning from my experiences. While I know this next Olympics will be challenging, I’m determined to give it my all.
Thanks so much for sharing your insights,Fran. Any words for aspiring judoka out there?
Fran:
Never give up on your dreams. The road might be long and challenging, but the rewards are worth it.
Fantastic advice! We’re all rootin’ for you in 2028,Fran!
