A Christmas Cracker: Discussing the Darts with Michael Van Gerwen
Welcome back, darts fans! it’s the most wonderful time of the year, and for us dart enthusiasts, that means the World Darts championship is in full swing. Today, I’m delighted to be joined by three-time world champion Michael Van Gerwen, to discuss all the action so far at Ally Pally! Michael, thank you for joining us.
Michael: Thanks for having me! Always a pleasure to chat darts.
Let’s dive straight in. It’s been a rollercoaster of a tournament so far, with your countryman, Glan Van Veen, suffering a surprise exit. What are your thoughts on that upset?
Michael: It’s always a shame to see a fellow Dutchman go out early, especially one with Gian’s talent. Darts is a game of fine margins, and sometimes that’s just how it goes. It happens to the best of us. Ricky Evans played a grate game, though, can’t take anything away from him.
Ricky Evans, of course, secured that victory in a nail-biting sudden-death showdown with Dave Chisnall. It seems the momentum can swing in an instant at this tournament. What do you think are the key factors for players to maintain focus and composure under such pressure?
Michael: absolutely! This tournament is unique. The crowd, the atmosphere, the pressure – it’s something else. Consistency is key. You need a strong mental game to ride out those highs and lows, and trust in your abilities when it matters most.
Just look at you, Michael. You’ve won this championship three times, demonstrating incredible consistency and determination. With only three Dutch players remaining in the competition, what advice woudl you give to them to ensure they keep their heads in the game and go all the way?
Michael: Keep it simple. Stick to their game plan, focus on what they can control, and enjoy the experience. It’s a privilege to be at this stage of the tournament. Let the darts do the talking.
What a fantastic sentiment, Michael!
