A Champion for Community: Meet Pascal Maraval
As the school year approaches, we’re shining a spotlight on inspiring individuals from Olivet, Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin, and Saint-Hilaire-Saint-mesmin. Today, we meet Pascal Maraval, a dedicated resident who embodies the spirit of community involvement.
Pascal’s passion shines thru his work with the Foulées Roses,a vibrant event that unites thousands in the fight against breast cancer. For a decade, he has been the driving force behind this initiative, skillfully coordinating a team of volunteers to ensure its success.
“When the foulées roses first began,we had around thirty volunteers,” Pascal recalls. “Today, that number has grown to 160! I organize them into four key roles: registration and bib distribution, refreshment stations along the route and at the finish line, setup and takedown of event infrastructure, and course safety.”
While Pascal finds immense satisfaction in this role,he acknowledges the challenges of securing volunteers, particularly for the demanding safety positions. This issue reflects a broader trend, as volunteerism faces increasing obstacles in today’s fast-paced world.
Pascal’s commitment to community service extends far beyond the Foulées Roses.Since arriving in Olivet in 1997, he has generously dedicated his time and energy to various associations. He has served as president of the municipal Sports Union of olivet le Réveil for baby gym, founded and led Roller Olivet, and spearheaded Festiv’Olivet, an event he continues to head. His contributions also include serving as vice-president of BMX and treasurer of judo.
Pascal’s dedication to community building stems from a deep belief in the power of shared experiences and collaboration. “Associations are about connection, camaraderie, and contributing to something meaningful,” he explains. “I find immense joy in encouraging others to get involved. However, volunteering requires commitment, and finding dedicated individuals is becoming increasingly difficult.”
Beyond his community work,Pascal is a man of diverse interests. He’s an avid comic book collector, a skilled bargain hunter, a talented painter, and a fitness enthusiast who enjoys badminton, roller skating, hockey, walking, and yoga.
The Power of Community: IN CONVERSATION WITH PASCAL MARAVAL
Welcome back, sports fans! Today, we’re shifting gears slightly, stepping off the field and into the heart of what truly makes communities thrive: dedication, passion, and volunteerism.
Joining us is Pascal Maraval, a true champion for his community in olivet, France. Pascal, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
Pascal: It’s my pleasure! I firmly believe that a strong community is built on the shoulders of it’s volunteers.
Our team was intrigued by your decade-long involvement with the Foulées Roses, an event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Can you tell us more about what drives your commitment to this cause?
Pascal: The Foulées Roses is incredibly special to me. Witnessing thousands of runners come together, united by a common goal to fight this disease, is truly inspiring. It’s more than just a race; it’s a festivity of hope and resilience.
You mentioned a significant increase in volunteers as the event’s inception. What strategies have you employed to attract and retain such a dedicated team?
Pascal: It’s been a team effort, truly. We’ve focused on clear communication, outlining the different roles and responsibilities, and ensuring everyone feels valued and appreciated.
But, as you pointed out earlier, securing volunteers, especially for demanding roles like course safety, remains a challenge.
Pascal: absolutely. Life is undeniably more hectic than it once was. People are juggling work, families, and countless othre commitments. Finding the time to volunteer can be tough.
That said, I firmly believe that even small contributions can make a big difference.
[Moderator]: I couldn’t agree more. We’ve seen this echoed across the sports world, too. Community involvement is essential, whether it’s local youth programs, supporting adaptive athletes, or simply lending a hand at a neighborhood sporting event.
Pascal: Precisely! Sports are a powerful tool for bringing people together. They teach teamwork, discipline, and the importance of giving back.
We understand your involvement extends far beyond the Foulées Roses. You’ve been actively involved in various associations for over two decades. What motivates you to dedicate so much of your time and energy to these initiatives?
Pascal: For me, it’s about fostering that sense of connection. associations create spaces for people to come together, share their passions, and contribute to something meaningful. Whether it’s through sports, arts,or other community initiatives, these experiences enrich our lives and strengthen the bonds within our community.
Do you have any advice for individuals who might be hesitant to get involved or unsure where to start?
Pascal: Start small! There’s always a need auras a need for volunteers—from assisting at local events to lending a hand at a community garden.Even a few hours a month can make a difference. Find something that you’re passionate about, and go for it! You won’t regret it.
Pascal, thank you for sharing your insights and inspiring us all to become more active participants in our communities.
Pascal: Thank you for having me.
