From Tar Heel to Silver Warrior: Andrew Platek’s Coaching Journey Begins at Niskayuna
Fresh out of college and just two months into his coaching career, Andrew Platek is already making waves at Niskayuna high School. The former Guilderland star, who honed his skills at North Carolina under legendary coach Roy williams and finished his collegiate career at Siena, brings a wealth of experience and a contagious enthusiasm to the JV basketball program.
Platek’s arrival at Niskayuna was a serendipitous chain of events. A suggestion from his friend, Brett Krug, a local special education teacher and Niskayuna football coach, sparked the connection. Platek’s prior experience coaching Joey DiPiazza and Jelani Privott at the Impact Athletic Center further solidified his ties to the community.
Despite the whirlwind recruitment process, Platek seamlessly transitioned into his new role. He credits his early success to his deep understanding of the game and his passion for nurturing young talent. “I see these kids improving every day,” Platek shared after a recent victory against Amsterdam. ”That’s the greatest thing in the world.”
Niskayuna varsity coach mike Grasso is equally impressed with Platek’s dedication and coaching acumen.”He’s going to be a great coach,” Grasso stated.”His basketball IQ is off the charts, and his attention to detail aligns perfectly with our philosophy. He’s fantastic with the kids, and his energy is infectious.”
Platek’s coaching philosophy is heavily influenced by his time under Roy williams. He emphasizes structured practices, detailed game plans, and open dialog with his players. “Coach Williams ran one of the most well-organized programs I’ve ever seen,” Platek explained. “He believed in building strong relationships with his players, both on and off the court.”
this emphasis on player development extends beyond the Xs and Os. platek understands the importance of fostering a positive and supportive surroundings where players can thrive. He encourages open dialogue, actively listens to his players’ concerns, and strives to create a culture of trust and respect.
While platek is focused on building a strong foundation for the JV program, he also keeps a watchful eye on his alma mater, Siena. He maintains a close connection with Saints junior Brendan coyle, a fellow Niskayuna graduate, and enjoys reminiscing about his time playing against Syracuse when Gerry McNamara was an assistant coach there.
With his infectious enthusiasm, deep basketball knowledge, and unwavering commitment to his players, Andrew Platek is poised to make a lasting impact on the Niskayuna basketball program. His journey from Tar Heel to Silver Warrior is just beginning, and the future looks bright for both Platek and the young athletes he mentors.
