Benavente Archers Shine at the Final RAUS Qualifying Event
The final qualifying event for the Spanish Archery Championship, held in Zamora on Sunday, doubled as the XXIV National Christmas Archery Tournament and the XI Reny Picot Trophy 2024. This prestigious event,offering attractive prizes,drew a full house of 88 archers to the City Sports Pavilion in zamora.
Registration for this crucial RAUS qualifying round and tournament filled up rapidly, highlighting the high level of interest and competition.
Among the participants was a strong contingent from Zamora, including archers from the C.D Arqueros Zamora and the C.D Arqueros Benavente. Notably, the Benavente club fielded six archers in the conventional archery category.
These archers dominated the traditional archery division, securing four out of the six podium spots in both the men’s and women’s categories. Bernardo Martínez claimed second place, while the women’s podium was a clean sweep for Benavente, with Sara Herrero, johanna Herrero, and Elizabeth Fernández taking the top three spots.
Adding to the success of Benavente archers, Stephen Villafañe, a Benavente native competing for the C.D Arqueros Zamora in the compound bow category, finished a respectable 17th with a score of 550 points.This remarkable performance by the Benavente archers underscores the growing strength and talent within the club, solidifying thier position as a force to be reckoned with in the Spanish archery scene.

The XI Reny Picot Trophy archery tournament saw impressive performances from Benavente archers, showcasing their skill and determination. While the men’s category witnessed fierce competition, the women’s division was dominated by a trio of Benavente athletes.
In the men’s competition, Bernardo Martínez faced a formidable challenge from Zamora’s Benjamín Rodríguez, who ultimately secured victory with an impressive 560 points. Martínez,known for his consistent performance,had a slower start,trailing behind Rodríguez,José Enrique Rodríguez (Arqueros Tradicionales Valladolid),and Francisco Requejo (Arco Ponferrada). Though, he rallied in the second round, securing a well-deserved second place and pushing Requejo to third.
The women’s category was a showcase of Benavente’s archery prowess. Sara Herrero,Johanna Rodríguez,and Elizabeth Rodríguez established a commanding lead in the frist round,scoring 274,246,and 246 points respectively.Gema Cabrera of Arqueros Abulenses briefly challenged their dominance with 248 points, but herrero, Rodríguez, and Rodríguez ultimately solidified their positions in the second round, finishing first, second, and third with scores of 549, 493, and 492 respectively.
the tournament, organized by C.D Arqueros Zamora in collaboration with the Federación territorial de Tiro con Arco de Castilla y León (FTACY), attracted archers from across the region, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport. this year’s event saw a record number of participants, reflecting the increasing interest in archery and the prestige of the Reny Picot trophy.

Among them were Juan carlos Herrero, Bernardo Martínez, and Sara Herrero, representing Benavente, alongside Benjamín Rodríguez and manuel andrés from Zamora. The tension mounted as the competition reached its climax, with each archer striving for victory.
Ultimately, Sara Herrero emerged victorious, showcasing exceptional skill and composure to claim the coveted trophy. The awards ceremony was graced by Juan del Canto, the Deputy of Sports from the Zamora Provincial Council, and Manuel Alesander, the sports Councillor of the Zamora City Council, who presented the prizes to the deserving athletes.

RAUS Quinta Prueba Results: Recurve Men’s Division
The fifth round of the Regional Archery Union Series (RAUS) also saw impressive performances from archers across the region. In the Recurve Men’s division, Álvaro Artime from C.D Arqueros Zamora secured the top spot, followed closely by Javier Sastre of Arco Lancia and Borja García of Arcolid.
