Newcastle’s Defensive Wall: A Fort Impenetrable?
Welcome back too the show, folks! today we’re diving deep into a Premier League weekend that was filled with surprises, upsets, and dominant displays. Joining me to dissect all the action is former England international and decorated defender, Gareth Southgate. Gareth, thanks for joining us.
Gareth Southgate: it’s a pleasure to be here. certainly a lot to talk about this week!
Host: Absolutely. Now,let’s start with the standout performance – Newcastle United extending their winning streak to four with another clean sheet. martin Dúbravka, their Slovakian goalkeeper, is on fire right now. Four clean sheets in a row, Gareth, is that sustainable?
Gareth Southgate: It’s incredibly notable, no doubt. Dúbravka is in top form, but it’s not just him. Newcastle’s defense as a unit is incredibly well-organized and disciplined. Eddie Howe has instilled a real sense of solidity at the back. can they keep this up throughout the season? It’s a big ask, but they’re certainly making a statement.
Host: Definitely making a statement, especially against a struggling Manchester United side. Two early goals silenced Old Trafford. Was it simply a case of Newcastle capitalizing on United’s weaknesses, or did they outplay them entirely?
Gareth Southgate: I wouldn’t say it was simply capitalizing on weaknesses, even though those early goals undoubtedly rattled United. Newcastle played with a real intensity and purpose. They pressed high, disrupted United’s rhythm, and created scoring chances.
Host: It’s certainly concerning for Manchester United. Three consecutive losses, dipping fourth in the table. What are the major factors contributing to their recent downturn?
Gareth Southgate: Confidence is a major factor. When things aren’t going your way, it’s easy for doubt to creep in. They seem to be lacking that attacking creativity and fluidity they possessed earlier in the season. Defensively, they’re also looking vulnerable.
Host: Shifting gears a bit, what did you make of Chelsea’s back-to-back defeats? Losing to Fulham at home followed by another defeat to an Ipswich town side fighting relegation.
Gareth Southgate: Definitely a blip for Chelsea. Losing to Fulham was unexpected, even more so at Stamford Bridge. Ipswich have shown some fight, but Chelsea should have been able to overcome them. it raises questions about their consistency and perhaps a dip in morale. They have the quality to bounce back, but it’s significant they address these issues quickly.
Host: Absolutely. This speaks volumes about the unpredictability of the Premier League this season.
Gareth Southgate: absolutely.
It’s truly wide open. There are no guarantees, every match is a battle.
Host: Now,I want to open this up to our audience. What are your thoughts on Newcastle’s impressive run? Do they have what it takes to challenge for the title? Is this the beginning of the end for Manchester United under Ten Hag? Share your opinions in the comments below.Gareth, always a pleasure having you on the show. Thanks for your insights!
Gareth Southgate: My pleasure, always good to be here.
Remember, folks, keep the conversation going. Let us no your thoughts!
