Timber Addresses Van der Vaart’s Criticism of His Captaincy
Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber has finally responded to the controversial remarks made by former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart regarding his captaincy. Van der Vaart, speaking on the popular football program Rondo, suggested that Timber should be stripped of the armband due to perceived dips in his performance.
“I wasn’t even aware of it,” Timber admitted in an interview with RTV Rijnmond. “Sometiems I get messages forwarded to me, and that’s how I see these things.”
Van der Vaart’s comments came amidst a period where Timber’s performances had drawn scrutiny. On December 9th, he stated, “you know what you have to do? Take away his armband. He’s thinking about other things now, that he has to help the team. I’ve been captain myself, and there are a lot of things that come with it that you don’t necessarily want to deal with. Timber can’t focus on his game. As captain, you have other responsibilities. I think it would be good for him to just focus on playing football again.”
Timber was appointed captain of Feyenoord last summer following the departure of lutsharel Geertruida to RB Leipzig. He views the role as a critically important honor. “It’s a privilege,” Timber stated. “Sometimes you don’t fully realize it, but it’s a huge thing. Considering where I come from and the progress I’ve made, I’m incredibly proud to be captain of Feyenoord.”
The 22-year-old midfielder appreciates the trust placed in him by head coach Brian Priske. ”It’s great to have been given this opportunity,” Timber said. “I already felt like one of the leaders in the team, but wearing the armband changes things on the pitch. You become the face of the team and have more contact with the coach.”
Despite the criticism, Timber seems resolute to retain the captaincy. “I actually enjoy it,” he confessed. ”I like challenges, and ultimately, it helps you grow as a person. You take on more responsibility. Whether I’m a good captain? Let others decide that.”
timber acknowledges that there’s some truth to Van der Vaart’s assessment. “You can only help the team if you’re at your best,” he admitted. “Performing well yourself and then helping the team from that position is crucial. You shouldn’t focus too much on the team at the expense of your own performance. That’s something I’m still learning, to be honest. It’s a new situation, so it’s understandable.”
This situation highlights the complexities of leadership in football, especially for young players thrust into prominent roles. While Timber’s performances may have fluctuated, his willingness to learn and grow as a captain is commendable. Only time will tell if he can silence his critics and lead Feyenoord to success.
