Sabalenka Sets Sights on Australian Open three-Peat
Dominating the tennis world in 2024,Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No. 1, is far from complacent. Fresh off victories at both the US Open and the Australian Open, the Belarusian powerhouse is already laser-focused on defending her title in Melbourne.
Sabalenka’s 2024 season was nothing short of remarkable. Reaching seven finals and securing four titles, including two Grand Slam victories, solidified her position at the pinnacle of women’s tennis.
Looking ahead to 2025, Sabalenka’s primary objective is to etch her name in Australian Open history. A victory in Melbourne would make her the first woman as Martina Hingis (1997-1999) to achieve a three-peat at the tournament.
“I feel refreshed and prepared,” Sabalenka declared upon arriving in Brisbane, where she will kick off her season on Sunday in preparation for the Australian Open, commencing on january 12th.
Brisbane: A Testing Ground for champions
Sabalenka has a strong affinity for Australia, citing the enthusiastic fan base as a key motivator. “I love Australia and always arrive hungry and ready,” she shared. “The support here is incredible, and that’s what makes Australia so special for tennis.”
Her 2024 campaign began in Brisbane, where she reached the final without dropping a set before falling to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
Following the off-season spent training in Florida, Sabalenka honed her skills in the Middle East, engaging in a practice match against her formidable rival, Iga Swiatek, in Abu Dhabi.
“Pre-season is about refining various aspects of your game,” Sabalenka explained. “the first tournament serves as a platform to experiment and determine what strategies work best.”
Despite her current dominance, Sabalenka remains committed to continuous improvement. “my net game needs work, and my serve isn’t as consistent as I’d like it to be,” she acknowledged.

John, welcome to the show!
John McEnroe: Thanks for having me! Always happy to talk tennis. Aryna Sabalenka is certainly making a name for herself, isn’t she?
Moderator: Absolutely. Sabalenka’s 2024 season was phenomenal, culminating in victories at both the US Open and Australian Open. Now, she’s gunning for a three-peat in Melbourne, a feat only achieved by Martina Hingis in the late 90s. What are your thoughts on her chances, John?
John mcenroe: It’s going to be a tough challenge, no doubt. Repeating as a Grand Slam champion is never easy, let alone achieving a three-peat. The pressure will be immense, especially with the history on the line.
moderator: Exactly. She seems to thrive under pressure, though. We saw that at the US Open.
John McEnroe: That’s true. She’s got that fighting spirit, that unwavering belief in herself. But tennis is a game of inches. One bad day, one off-moment, and it can all unravel.
Moderator: Let’s talk about her preparations. She’s already in brisbane, her first tournament of the year. How critically important is this warm-up event for her?
John mcenroe: Crucial. Brisbane is a great testing ground. It allows her to sharpen her game, get used to the australian conditions, and most importantly, build confidence. Plus, a strong showing there will send a message to the rest of the field.
Moderator: Speaking of the field, who do you see as Sabalenka’s biggest threats in Melbourne?
John McEnroe: Well, you can’t ignore Iga Swiatek. She’ll be hungry to reclaim the world No.1 spot. Then there’s Elena Rybakina, who already beat Sabalenka in Brisbane last year. Plus, you never discount veterans like Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, if she decides to return.
Moderator: It’s shaping up to be a thrilling tournament. John, what advice would you give Sabalenka as she prepares for this historic attempt?
John McEnroe: stay focused. Don’t listen to the noise, the expectations. Trust your game, your instincts. And most importantly, enjoy the ride. This is what you’ve worked for your entire life.
