Colombian Archer Arcila Makes History, Advances to Round of 16 in Paris
Colombia has another reason to celebrate at the Paris Olympics! Santiago Arcila, a talented archer, secured his spot in the round of 16 after impressive victories against formidable opponents.
Arcila’s journey began with a challenging match against Luxembourg’s Pit klein.Klein proved to be a tough adversary, scoring three perfect 10s in the first set and taking an early lead with a score of 30-26. However, Arcila displayed remarkable resilience, bouncing back in the second set to tie the score at 27 points. Despite both archers facing difficulties, Arcila’s accuracy improved, allowing him to clinch the following sets (26-23, 29-27, and 28-28) and advance to the next round.
His next opponent was Dan Olaru, the world number 13 from Moldova. Arcila once again found himself trailing in the first set, with Olaru leading 29-26. Undeterred,Arcila mounted a comeback,showcasing his determination and skill.
In a thrilling second set, Arcila’s final two arrows found their mark with scores of 9 and 10, complemented by an 8 on his third shot, totaling 27 points and surpassing Olaru’s 24. The 24-year-old Colombian continued his dominant performance,securing the next two sets with scores of 28-26 and 28-25,ultimately winning the match 6-2. This historic victory etched Arcila’s name in Colombian Olympic history.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Arcila expressed his gratitude for the chance to represent his country and his excitement for the upcoming challenges. He acknowledged the strength of his opponents, Klein and Olaru, and thanked his family for their unwavering support.Arcila is now the sole Colombian representative in individual archery at the paris Olympics, following the elimination of Jorge Enríquez and ana María Rendón earlier in the week.
Looking ahead, Arcila will face his next opponent in the round of 16 on Sunday, August 4th, at 4:00 a.m. He will also compete in the mixed team event alongside Ana María Rendón on Friday, August 2nd, against the German duo of Michelle Kroppen and Florian Unruh. The Colombian delegation hopes to continue their success and bring home more medals.

Your career has spanned decades, witnessing incredible achievements in the sport. What are your thoughts on Santiago Arcila’s remarkable journey at the Paris Olympics,making history as the only Colombian archer to reach the Round of 16?
Paredes: Santiago’s performance has been nothing short of sensational. He’s displayed incredible resilience, battling back from early deficits against strong opponents like Pit Klein and Dan Olaru. to come out on top against the world number 13 speaks volumes about his talent and determination. He’s truly carrying the Colombian flag high.
His comeback victories against Klein and Olaru were particularly impressive. What stood out to you about his mental fortitude during those matches?
Paredes: Santiago stayed focused and composed even when facing adversity. he didn’t let early setbacks crumble his confidence. It’s clear he possesses a strong mental game, a crucial aspect needed to succeed at this level.
Arcila will now face challenging competition as he moves forward. What advice would you give him going into the Round of 16?
Paredes: My advice would be to maintain the same focus and composure he’s shown so far. This isn’t the time to change tactics. Trust in his training, stick to his game plan, and most importantly, believe in himself.
He’s also competing in the mixed team event with ana María Rendón. How crucial is team camaraderie in archery, and do you see their partnership as a potential force to be reckoned with?
Paredes: Teamwork is vital in archery, particularly in the mixed team event. It requires synchronicity, trust, and mutual support. Ana María is a talented archer herself. Together, they can definitely challenge for a medal if they can capitalize on their strengths and support each other.
Arcila’s success has ignited a surge of excitement in Colombia. What do you think this means for the future of archery in the country?
Paredes: Santiago’s accomplishment is a tremendous inspiration for aspiring young archers across Colombia. It proves that with dedication and hard work, anything is possible. I believe we’ll see a surge in interest in the sport, and hopefully, we’ll see more young talent emerge in the years to come.
