The Chicago Bears’ 2023 season has been a tale of unfulfilled potential and dramatic upheaval. After a promising 4-2 start, the teamS fortunes took a sharp downturn, culminating in a dismal 3-14 record.Quarterback Justin Fields, the frist overall pick in the 2021 draft, faced immense scrutiny as the offense sputtered.
Fields’ early performances were a rollercoaster, showcasing flashes of brilliance alongside frustrating inconsistencies. He threw for 1,317 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions in the first six games. However, the Bears’ bye week in Week 6 marked a turning point.
Over the next four games, Fields struggled mightily, managing only 699 passing yards and failing to throw a touchdown. While he limited turnovers, the offensive stagnation was alarming. This led to the dismissal of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was unable to unlock Fields’ potential.
Despite glimpses of improvement, including a 27-point performance against the Minnesota Vikings and a 20-point showing against the Detroit Lions, the Bears continued to falter.A particularly egregious loss to the Lions, where head coach Matt Eberflus mismanaged the clock in the final seconds, sealed his fate, leading to his firing.
The arrival of interim head coach Thomas Brown did little to stem the tide. The Bears suffered four more losses, hitting rock bottom with a 6-3 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks on Christmas Day. This game epitomized the team’s struggles, with seven punts and a nullified touchdown due to a penalty.
The question now facing the Bears’ front office is whether Fields is the franchise quarterback they envisioned. despite the talent surrounding him – receivers DJ Moore, Keenan allen, and Rome Odunze, running back D’Andre Swift, and a decent offensive line – Fields has yet to consistently perform at a high level.while some blame the offensive line for Fields’ struggles, citing the 67 times he was sacked (a league high), the offensive line’s performance improved after a shaky start. The primary issue appears to be Fields’ decision-making. He holds onto the ball for an average of 3.09 seconds, indicating a slow read of the defence.
Fields’ ability to make breathtaking plays with his legs is undeniable, as evidenced by his 3,393 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and six interceptions. However, his development hinges on improving his pre-snap reads and accelerating his decision-making process.
The Bears’ future hinges on Fields’ progress. General manager Ryan Poles must surround him with a top-tier coaching staff, possibly targeting experienced mentors like Pete Carroll or Ben Johnson, to maximize his potential. the clock is ticking for Fields to prove he can lead the bears back to relevance.
Can Justin Fields Lead the Bears Back to Glory? A Conversation with Super Bowl Champion Trent Dilfer
the Chicago Bears have hit a rough patch. After a promising start to the 2023 season, the team crumbled, finishing with a dismal 3-14 record, leaving many fans wondering if they’ve finally found “the guy” under center. Joining us today to dissect the Bears’ struggles and the future of quarterback Justin Fields is Super Bowl champion and former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer.
Moderator: Trent, thanks for joining us today. This Bears season was a rollercoaster,to say the least. Where do you think things went wrong for them?
Trent Dilfer:
You know, it’s hard to pinpoint one single issue. They started strong, showed real promise, and then things just seemed to unravel. Part of it is definitely on Fields. He flashes amazing talent at times, but the consistency just isn’t there yet. Maybe it’s the system, maybe it’s the coaching, but the decision-making and reading defenses seem to be holding him back.
Moderator: You mentioned system and coaching. What are your thoughts on the abrupt coaching changes this season?
Trent Dilfer:
Firing Matt Eberflus mid-season is a notable move, and it speaks volumes about the level of concern from the institution. It’s a tough spot for everyone involved. A revolving door of coaches doesn’t help a young quarterback find his footing, that’s without a doubt.
Moderator: Speaking of Fields, he has undeniable talent. Those legs can do some damage, but is that enough?
Trent Dilfer:
Listen, athleticism alone won’t win you Super Bowls. Look at the greats – Manning, Brady, Montana, they where masters of the mental game. Reading defenses, anticipating situations, making smart decisions under pressure – those are the traits that separate good quarterbacks from great ones.
Fields needs to refine those skills. The
Bears need to surround him with experienced coaches who can help him grow, not just physically but mentally. They need a game plan that maximizes his strengths while minimizing his weaknesses.

Do you think fields has what it takes to lead the Bears back to relevance?
Trent Dilfer:
I’m not ready to write him off just yet. He’s young, he’s got talent, but the clock is ticking. this offseason is crucial for his growth. If Ryan Poles can assemble a top-flight coaching staff, a quarterback whisperer who can unlock his potential, then maybe, just maybe, Fields will blossom into the franchise quarterback they envisioned when they took him first overall.
Moderator:
Agreed.
A lot depends on General Manager Ryan Poles’ decisions. He’s got his work cut out for him.
