## Halep’s Australian Open Dreams Delayed Again
Former world number one Simona Halep’s return to the Australian Open will have to wait a little longer. The Romanian tennis star, currently ranked 877th in the world, announced her withdrawal from both the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland (December 29 – January 5) and the Australian Open qualifiers (January 6-9) via her Instagram account.
Halep, who received invitations to both tournaments, cited recurring knee and shoulder pain as the reason for her decision. [[2]] This setback comes after a challenging period for the two-time Grand Slam champion.Following a suspension for doping violations that kept her out of the first two Grand Slams of 2023 and 2024, Halep returned to competition in the spring of 2024, only to be hampered by injuries.
In May 2024, she was forced to retire from the second round of the Trophée Clarins in Paris due to left knee pain. Earlier in her career, a shoulder injury forced her withdrawal from the Miami Masters 1000 in 2021.
Halep’s latest injury has pushed back her return to competitive tennis until February 2025. Fans will have to wait to see her back on court, but she is expected to make her comeback in front of a home crowd at the 250 tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania (February 3-9).
This delay is a meaningful blow for Halep, who reached the Australian Open final in 2018,ultimately losing to Caroline Wozniacki in a thrilling three-set match. [[1]] Her fans will be hoping for a swift recovery and a triumphant return to the court in 2025.
