Me: Thirty-five years with BCZ Slagveld is a remarkable feat. what has kept you so steadfastly committed to the club?
Alain: It’s more than just a club, it’s family. We’ve celebrated victories, navigated challenges, and grown together. When I see young players pick up a racquet, the fire in their eyes reminds me why I’ve dedicated so much time and energy to BCZ Slagveld.
Me: Beyond badminton,you spearheaded the introduction of pickleball to Zutendaal. What sparked that interest, and what makes this sport so special?
Alain: Pickleball captivated me with its accessibility. It’s a fast-paced, strategic game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. It’s a fantastic way to bring people together, encourage physical activity, and just have fun. Seeing it flourish in Zutendaal has been immensely satisfying.

There’s a certain rapport among athletes, coaches, and enthusiasts. Speaking of coaching, what’s your coaching philosophy?
Alain: I believe in fostering a positive and encouraging environment where players can thrive.It’s about helping them unlock their potential, celebrating their successes, and supporting them through challenges. The journey is just as important as the destination.
Me: And what is your take on the rising popularity of pickleball? Is it a threat to established sports like badminton?
Alain: not at all. I see it as a compliment. Pickleball expands the realm of possibilities for people seeking active, engaging activities. It’s more about choice and diversity – enriching the sporting landscape rather than replacing traditional sports.
I suspect many badminton enthusiasts may yet cross over to pickleball and vice versa, adding another layer to the local sporting tapestry.
