The 32-year-old quarterback boasts a wealth of NFL experience, having started 65 games since being drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. Notably, Bridgewater spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints while Campbell served as an assistant coach, perhaps providing a familiarity that will aid his integration into the Lions’ system.While second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker currently occupies the backup position, Bridgewater’s arrival adds a proven veteran presence to the Lions’ quarterback room. This week we brought in former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst, Jon Kitna, to discuss the Detroit Lions’ recent signing of veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Moderator: Jon, thanks for joining us. The Lions are making a serious push for the NFC North title and a deep playoff run. Do you think bringing in Teddy Bridgewater is the right move at this stage in the season?
Jon Kitna: I think it’s a smart move, but it’s not just about this season. bridgewater brings valuable experience and leadership, which will benefit the entire quarterback room. while Hendon Hooker has shown promise, having a seasoned pro like teddy around, someone who’s been through the playoff grind, is invaluable. It elevates the competition and pushes everyone to get better.
Moderator: Bridgewater spent last season on the Lions’ roster, but saw very limited action. Do you see him taking over as the primary backup this year?
Jon Kitna: It’s certainly a possibility. Hooker is still developing, and Bridgewater’s familiarity with the system from last year gives him a head start. However, I wouldn’t count Hooker out just yet. This competition will be good for both of them.
Moderator: The Lions have a unique situation here, with Bridgewater having played under dan Campbell during his time with the New Orleans Saints. Do you think that prior relationship will play a role in Bridgewater’s integration into the team?
Jon Kitna: Absolutely. That existing familiarity with Campbell’s coaching style, his terminology, and expectations, will definitely expedite Bridgewater’s adjustment. It’s like coming into a situation where you already speak the same language.
Moderator: some might argue that having a veteran backup rather then focusing on developing a younger player like hooker could hinder the lions’ long-term progress. What are your thoughts on that?
Jon Kitna: I understand that outlook, but I think the Lions are striking a good balance here.
Bridgewater’s presence allows Hooker to learn from a seasoned professional, watching how he prepares, studies film, and conducts himself in a playoff surroundings. That experience is invaluable for a young quarterback. Meanwhile, the Lions have a capable backup who they can trust in high-pressure situations.
Moderator: Do you think this move makes the Lions a legitimate Super Bowl contender?
Jon Kitna: I think it certainly strengthens thier position. They were already a talented team, but the playoffs are a different beast.
Having a steady hand like Bridgewater as insurance gives them a better chance to navigate the inevitable bumps and bruises of a postseason run. they have a strong offense, a solid defense, and now, a quarterback room with both experience and youth. It’s an intriguing mix, and I’m excited to see how it unfolds.
