BarcelonaIncident this Friday afternoon on Diagonal in Barcelona. A 17-year-old minor under the care of the General Directorate of Child Care and Adolescence (DGAIA) of the Generalitat has given birth to a baby and, in the face of the fear that custody would also be taken away from her, her family has taken mother and child from the Maternity Hospital Clínic, according to police sources. Specifically, she would have been the baby’s grandmother accompanied by other family members. Then, together with the mother, they got into a car and tried to escape down Diagonal avenue. Despite this, they managed to stop them and took shelter in a cashier on Diagonal, which quickly began to be surrounded by Mossos d’Esquadra vehicles and ambulances to mediate with them. The Mossos have spoken with the family and the dialogue has borne fruit: the mother and the baby have been transferred once again to a hospital, sources from the Department of Social Rights report.
Previously, however, there were moments of tension and a family member confronted the police and was arrested for resisting the authorities. The incident started at 16:00 and around 20:00 it was considered closed. A lawyer for the family also appeared at the scene.
The DGAIA currently has more than 8,000 minors under guardianship, of which around half live in a reception center and the rest with extended family (grandparents or uncles). These children and adolescents cannot live with their biological family for various reasons: due to neglect or violence, among other causes, but in no case are they involved in criminal and police cases. These minors are cared for by specific juvenile justice services.
