A new Olympiad, new rules for judo competitions. The world body of the discipline, the IJF, has unveiled a whole series of technical changes which will be implemented in international competitions from the beginning of next year, until the Los Angeles Games in 2028. Presented during the last weekend during a technical meeting in Istanbul, they are the fruit of a consultation process started before the Paris 2024 Games. From June, national federations were invited to send proposals for the rules of judo. The ideas formulated by member countries were then presented at an IJF technical meeting organized after the Abu Dhabi 2024 Grand Slam. They were evaluated and discussed by a group of experts, before being approved by the executive committee. The IJF explains that it also took the opinion of the media in order to be able to answer as many questions as possible. Objective of these technical modifications: to put the decision of each competition in the hands of the athletes. The new rules will be implemented for the first time at the international level during the Paris 2025 Grand Slam. They will be used until the senior world championships, from June 13 to 20 in Budapest, before being subject to a revision.
