The Netherlands is still on course to retain the important sixth place on the UEFA coefficient list, although Portugal again reduced its deficit this week.
The Eredivisie has only won four points in the past three evenings: two from Feyenoord (in coefficient country, a win is worth two points) and one from each AZ and FC Twente. There were defeats for PSV and Ajax. Divided by six – due to the number of clubs at the start of the season – this amounts to a coefficient of 0.67.
Portugal peaked late this week: the victories of FC Porto and Vitória Guimarães brought the weekly coefficient to 1.00 after poor Champions League results. Now that the end of the first phase is approaching, the Eredivisie has a lead of more than two points over the Primeira Liga.
Previously, mid-December was an important measurement moment, because then the first phase was over. That moment has now been postponed to the end of January, although the Conference League competition phase ends next Thursday.
The reward for number six in the ranking is generous: they can register two clubs in the main phase of the Champions League in the 2026/27 season. In addition, the number three from that country will have the opportunity to qualify for the elite competition through the preliminary rounds. Next season, the Netherlands will in any case have two teams at the highest level.
On Friday on VI PRO we will discuss the developments on the UEFA coefficient list in more detail.
