[서울=뉴시스] Reporter Kwon Seong-geun = U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on the 17th (local time) that he had nominated Hershel Walker, a former NFL player and Republican candidate for the Georgia U.S. Senate, to be the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.
The Bahamas is a small island country in the Caribbean.
President-elect Trump wrote on his social media (SNS) Truth Social that day, “Herschel has served as an ambassador for this country’s youth, men and women in the military, and athletes at home and abroad for decades.”
At the same time, President-elect Trump mentioned that Walker served as co-chair of the White House Sports and Fitness and Nutrition Committee during the first administration.
Walker played as a running back at the University of Georgia and won the Heisman Trophy. He later played in the NFL.
President-elect Trump supported Walker, who clashed with Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock in the 2022 Georgia U.S. Senate election. In the midterm elections held at the time, neither candidate received 50% of the vote, and Warnock won the runoff election.
Walker promoted an image of emphasizing family during the election, but his approval ratings faltered in 2009 amid allegations that he had forced his girlfriend to have an abortion.
