Pascal Cheng (HE) & Sarah Dlapka and Anja Rumpold (DD) reach the top 10:
After the badminton thriller in the last game against the seeded Estonian Andrei Schmidt, today’s round of 16 was the next cracker for Pascal Cheng. In the men’s singles he met number 4 seed Luis Pongratz from Germany. In the fight for the quarter-finals, the young Austrian cannot find his way into the game as desired. Pascal Cheng seems a bit exhausted after the exhausting duels of the past few days and cannot stand up to the German as usual. The No. 4 seed in the tournament wins in two sets with 21:10 and 21:7 and moves into the quarterfinals. Pascal Cheng sensationally takes 9th place at the 2024 U19 European Championships.
Sarah Dlapka and Anja Rumpold met Agathe Cuevas and Kathell Desmots-Chacun from France in the round of 16 of the women’s doubles competition today. A duel at eye level develops against the number 2 seeded pairing. The Austrians got off to a good start in the first set. But the French women then continuously showed their class, took the lead and defended their lead until the end. The second set is similar, in which Sarah Dlapka and Anja Rumpold play badminton that is worth seeing. With the score at 11:8 for the French, the two Austrians won the most spectacular rally of the game. But Cuevas and Desmots-Chacun were able to maintain their lead in the second set and qualified for the quarter-finals with 21:16 and 21:16. The Austrians took 9th place in the women’s doubles competition at this European Championship.
Statement from ÖBV youth national coach Daniel Graßmück:
“Pascal had to pay tribute to the efforts of the last few days and unfortunately couldn’t do anything against the German, who was ranked No. 4. The round of 16 and the way in which it was reached can definitely be seen as a success. Anja and Sarah were able to challenge the tournament’s No. 2 at times, but couldn’t maintain the consistency high enough to win at least one set. This ends a European Championship for us in which we can be satisfied with many performances and build on them.”
