The season-ending BWF World Tour Badminton Finals are now officially underway as 40 players and pairs commence battle in an attempt to win titles across five categories — men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
In the opening match of the tournament, world No. 1 Shi Yuqi of China secured a hard-fought victory over Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, while Olympic silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn defeated Japanese ace Naraoka Kodai in the other Group B contest.
In the women’s singles, Olympic champion An Seyoung of South Korea secured a comfortable straight-set win over Thailand’s Supanida Katethong before Han Yue eased past former world No. 1 Yamaguchi Akane 21-19, 21-17.
The mixed doubles also got underway, with favorites Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin easing to a straight-set victory, while in the women’s doubles, China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning were pushed all the way by the impressive Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand of India.
