The miniscule of three hundredths of a second cost ski racer Lena Dürr a podium finish. The German started the final as the half-time leader.
Ski racer Lena Dürr narrowly missed out on a podium place in the Killington slalom despite having the best time. As the leader after the first round, the strongest German alpine athlete in the US ski area slipped to fourth place. The Bavarian was three hundredths of a second short of the podium.
The victory went to the Swiss Camille Rast, who relegated her teammate Wendy Holdener and the Swede Anna Swenn Larsson (+0.57 seconds) to shared second place. Dürr’s teammate Emma Aicher started the second round as sixth best, but was then eliminated there.
Top favorite Shiffrin is missing after a fall the day before
The races in Killington were actually supposed to be a festival for local hero Mikaela Shiffrin, who was aiming for her 100th success as a World Cup record winner. In the giant slalom on Saturday she was close to breaking this sound barrier. But then she fell as the leader after the first run in the final, rolled over and crashed into a boundary fence.
The 29-year-old suffered a severe stab wound in the stomach – how this happened was not specified. The US Ski Association reported that the wound could not be stitched because it was very deep and there was a risk of infection. Shiffrin was in pain, it was said, but at least had not suffered any broken bones or ligament injuries. Internal organs were not seriously injured either. It remains unclear when Shiffrin will be able to train and race again.
