Feasible group for the DFB team at the European Football Championship

The German footballers are lucky: the DFB team of national coach Christian Wück is initially avoiding defending champions England at the European Football Championship in Switzerland.

The German soccer players will meet Poland, Denmark and Sweden in the preliminary round at the European Championships in Switzerland. This was the result of the draw by the European Football Union UEFA in Lausanne for the tournament from July 2nd to 27th, 2025. The national team of national coach Christian Wück will avoid defending champions England, at least in the group phase.

The record European champions from Germany are starting on the way to their desired ninth triumph in Group C. The exact game plan is to be published by UEFA this evening.

Opening game between Switzerland and Norway in Basel

The opening game will be played by the host team from Switzerland in Basel against Norway. Iceland and Finland complete Group A. In Group B, the world champions from Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy compete against each other. France, England, Wales and the Netherlands make up Group D. The DFB selection, Switzerland as well as Spain and France were seeded.

The top two groups reach the quarterfinals. As group winners, the German selection would play against the runners-up from the England/France group in Zurich, and as runners-up they would play against the winners of this group in Basel.

The DFB women lost the last European Championship final 2022 against England 1-2 at Wembley. For Wück, as the successor to Horst Hrubesch, it is the first tournament in charge of the women’s team after he was European and world champion with the DFB’s male U17 team.

Aiming for record attendance

The 16 participants take part in the tournament in eight stadiums, kick-off is at 6:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m. Basel’s St. Jakob-Park, the largest arena in Switzerland, has a capacity of 34,050 spectators and is also the venue for the final on July 27th. The semi-finals will be held in Zurich (23,150) and Geneva (28,150). UEFA and the Swiss organizers are aiming for a sold-out tournament and a record number of spectators: there were 574,875 visitors to the 2022 European Championship in England.
