Taking A Break: A Conversation with Olympian Maya Johnson
Today I’m joined by the unbelievable Maya Johnson, olympic gold medalist in track and field and a true inspiration both on and off the track. Maya, thanks so much for joining us today!
Maya: It’s a pleasure to be here!
Moderator: I wanted to pick your brain about something that’s been circulating in the news lately. As you know, numerous businesses are announcing holiday closures, including Yamanashi Queen Beads, who announced a break from December 28th to January 5th. Now, we know that rest and relaxation are crucial for athletes, but as a high achiever, how do you view these extended period of downtime for businesses? Do you see any parallels between athlete recovery and these company closures?
Maya: that’s a really captivating question! I think there’s definitely a parallel between athlete recovery and these holiday closures.
Just like athletes need time to rest their bodies and recharge their mental stamina after intense training and competition, businesses and their employees need a chance to step back, de-stress, and come back refreshed. Pushing through without breaks can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and even injuries in the case of athletes.
Moderator: I completely agree. Recognizing those needs and creating a structure around them is essential. These closures force people to disconnect and prioritize things outside work, which is crucial for long-term success.
Maya: Absolutely! When I was training for the Olympics, my coach constantly stressed the importance of rest days. It wasn’t about being lazy; it was about allowing our bodies to repair and come back stronger. The same applies to businesses. Giving employees time off allows them to return with renewed focus and creativity.
Moderator: It sounds like you have a healthy perspective on this. But some might argue that these closures can be inconvenient for customers who rely on those businesses, especially during the holiday season. What would you say to those who feel that way?
Maya: I understand that concern. But think about it this way: wouldn’t you rather have a business operating at its best with happy, energized employees than a business pushing through while burnt out? Ultimately, these closures can lead to better service and a more positive experience for everyone in the long run.
Moderator: That’s a great point! it’s critically important to think about the bigger picture. Now, Maya, you’ve accomplished incredible things in your career. What advice would you give to young athletes who are just starting their journey? What’s the most critically important thing they should remember?
Maya: I would tell them to always prioritize their well-being. Don’t be afraid to take breaks when you need them, listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Remember, success isn’t just about the wins; it’s also about the journey and taking care of yourself along the way.
moderator: Powerful words! Thank you so much for sharing your insights and experiences with us today, Maya. I truly appreciate your time.
Maya: It was my pleasure!
