Milan celebrated its 125th anniversary with the home match against Genoa on Sunday night. A ceremony, attended by Milan legends such as Andrea Pirlo and Filippo Inzaghi, took place. Music was played and Milan’s successes were celebrated. They also played in retro jerseys.
Before the actual ceremony started, images of Milan icons were shown on the big screen. Of course, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was one of the players shown – and then the supporters showed their displeasure.
Loud boos were heard across the San Siro.
This could be due to Milan’s poor results of late, as they sit a weak eighth in Serie A. Additionally, several Italian media reported this week that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is at odds with sporting director Antonio D’Ottavio – which could lead to him leaving the club.
At the same time, a banner hung on Curva Sud.
“Symbols of a Milan that no longer exists,” it read.
The match?
Milan had most of it and pushed for a lead throughout the match. But you never got a hole in Genoa. Alvaro Morata came closest when he hit the crossbar with ten minutes remaining.
But nothing decisive ever came. The match ended 0-0. Wild boos took place all over the San Siro even after the match.
Milan thus remains in eighth place in Serie A. Genoa is in 13th place.
