South Korean Sports Stars Shine in 2024 K-Brand Index
According to a recent report by the renowned big data analysis firm, Asia Brand Research Institute, Tottenham Hotspur’s star striker Son Heung-min has been crowned the top sports star in south Korea for 2024.
The K-Brand Index, which identifies leading brands across various sectors in South Korea, utilizes a complete methodology. It analyzes seven key indices: Trend,Media,Social,Community,Activation (TA),Positive,and Negative. these indices are carefully weighted and combined to generate a final score,reflecting a brand’s overall strength and influence.
Focusing on the sports sector, the 2024 K-Brand index for Sports Stars examined the top 30 athletes in each sport based on portal site search volume. The analysis encompassed a massive dataset of over 3 billion online data points collected between January 1st and November 30th, 2024.
Son Heung-min’s exceptional performance on the global stage, coupled with his immense popularity in South Korea, propelled him to the top spot. Following closely behind him were baseball stars Kim Do-young and Koo Ja-wook, securing the second and third positions respectively. Badminton ace an se-young claimed the fourth spot, highlighting the growing prominence of badminton in the country.
This year’s K-Brand Index results underscore the meaningful impact of South Korean athletes on the national sporting landscape. 아시아브랜드연구소 류원선 리서치센터장은 “2024년 국내 스포츠 핫이슈는 ‘개혁’과 ‘희망’으로 요약된다. 대한축구협회장과 대한체육회장의 연임에 대한 사회적 공방이 치열하게 전개됐으며, 안세영 선수로 촉발된 국내 스포츠 산업의 민낯은 불가피한 개혁의 대상으로 주목받았다. 파리에서 거둔 12년 만의 올림픽 최대 성과는 대한민국 자부심의 상징이었으며, 손흥민과 김도영의 뜨거운 열정은 새로운 희망의 아이콘으로 자리 잡았다”라고 평가했다.
그는 이어 “올 한해 국민들에게 큰 기쁨을 선사한 각 종목의 스포츠스타들은 칭찬 받기에 부족함이 없었으나, 여전히 축구와 야구를 비롯한 일부 종목에 치우진 편향 현상은 장기적 관점에서 개선해야 하는 과제로 손꼽힌다.해당 데이터는 빅데이터 시스템을 기반으로 산출된 온라인 인덱스 수치로 오프라인 인덱스 수치는 미반영된 것임을 감안해야 할 것”이라고 부연했다.
