This follows a flurry of elections in recent months, with 18 federations, including table tennis and taekwondo, already having chosen new leadership. 그중에서도 한 해 예산만 2049억원(2025년 기준)을 운영하는 대한축구협회장 선거는 12년 만에 경선으로 열려 주목받고 있다.정몽규 현 회장의 4선 도전에 허정무 전 축구대표팀 감독과 신문선 명지대 초빙교수가 가세해 후보 3명이 각축전을 벌이고 있다.
지난해 문화체육관광부의 감사 등으로 뭇매를 맞았던 정몽규 후보는 이를 의식한 듯 개혁과 소통 강화를 전면에 내세우면서 “과감한 개혁으로 신뢰를 회복하겠다. 정기적이고 효과적인 국민 소통 방안을 마련하겠다”고 밝혔다.또 2031년 아시안컵과 2035년 여자월드컵 대회 유치, 남녀 대표팀 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 랭킹 10위권 진입 등 국제 경쟁력 강화를 위한 공약도 제시했다.
다른 두 후보는 정 회장 체제의 축구협회에 대한 날을 세웠다.신문선 후보는 “정 회장이 낙선된다면 새로운 개혁과 변혁을 시작할 수 있을 것”이라면서 정부 감사에 따른 27개 처분 권고 즉각 조치, 축구협회 이미지 개선 등을 비전으로 내놓았다. 3일 기자회견에 나선 허정무 후보는 “축구협회와 선거운영위원회는 예상을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 불공정과 불투명의 극치를 보여주고 있다”고 비판하면서도 “운동장 상태가 나쁘다고 중단하는 법은 없다”며 선거 완주 의사를 밝혔다.
축구와 함께 지난해 문체부의 고강도 감사를 받았던 대한배드민턴협회는 무려 4명이 경선에 나서 협회장 자리를 놓고 치열한 경쟁을 예고했다. 김택규 현 회장이 연임을 노리는 가운데, 올림픽 배드민턴 금메달리스트 출신 김동문 원광대 교수, 전경훈 한국실업The race for leadership positions is heating up in several South Korean sports organizations.
