The Hong Kong A1 Basketball League playoffs kicked off with a bang, delivering unexpected results and nail-biting finishes.
In a stunning upset, the third-seeded Man Kwan fell to the sixth-seeded fujian, marking Man Kwan’s first absence from the semi-finals. Simultaneously occurring, the fourth-seeded Yong Lun narrowly escaped a defeat against the fifth-seeded Hong Yu, securing a hard-fought victory and a spot in the semi-finals against Eastern.
Yong Lun’s victory was anything but easy. Despite trailing by a point in the first quarter and leading by only three points at halftime, they managed to pull ahead in the third quarter with a 14-4 run. However, Hong Yu mounted a fierce comeback in the final minutes, closing the gap to just two points with 2.5 minutes remaining.

Fujian’s Rise and Yong Lun’s Narrow Escape: A Hong Kong basketball Playoff Analysis with Coach Li
Welcome back, hoops fans! The Hong Kong A1 Basketball League playoffs are underway, and they’ve already delivered a dose of pure excitement. To unpack the surprising upsets and nail-biting finishes, I’m joined by none other than Coach Li, a lifelong devotee of Hong Kong basketball with years of experience coaching at the highest levels. Coach Li, thanks for joining us!
Coach Li: It’s a pleasure to be here. These playoffs have been truly captivating!
Moderator: Absolutely. Let’s start with the shocker of the first round – Fujian taking down the always-strong Man Kwan. Many expected Man Kwan to cruise to the semi-finals, but Fujian’s balanced attack proved too much to handle. What were your impressions of Fujian’s performance?
Coach Li: I was genuinely impressed with Fujian. While they haven’t been necessarily dominant throughout the regular season, they showed remarkable resilience and depth in this game. The key, from my personal perspective, was their ability to spread the offensive load. Having 12 players contribute points speaks volumes about their team play and ability to adapt their strategy. It’s a testament to their coaching staff as well, clearly they had their players well-prepared for this matchup.
Moderator: You mentioned team play, and it was certainly on display. Man Kwan, on the other hand, seemed to struggle after Yang Ruihong’s unfortunate ankle injury early on. How much of an impact do you think his absence had?
Coach Li: Ruihong’s injury was undoubtedly a turning point. He’s a crucial part of Man kwan’s offence, and his absence undoubtedly disrupted their rhythm. While Miller stepped up admirably with 25 points, and Cai Zaiqin provided some valuable three-point shooting, it wasn’t enough to overcome Fujian’s collective effort.
moderator: Shifting gears to the other matchup, Yong Lun just barely squeaked by Hong Yu in a truly thrilling contest. That 87-85 victory must’ve been a heart-stopper for Yong Lun fans.
Coach Li: It was an absolute nail-biter! Yong Lun showed great composure when they went on that crucial 14-4 run in the third quarter, but Hong yu refused to back down. Huang Mingde led the charge, and Tochar Morrellus was a force to be reckoned with, dominating the boards with 21 rebounds. ultimately, Yong Lun’s defense held firm in the clutch, securing the win.
Moderator: This playoff round has certainly set the stage for an exciting semi-final matchup between Eastern and Yong Lun. Based on what we’ve seen, who do you think has the edge?
Coach Li: That’s a tough one! It’s always a thrilling battle when these two teams clash.Eastern has been incredibly consistent all season, but Yong Lun’s resilience and fighting spirit shouldn’t be underestimated. They’ve proven they can win close games under pressure.
