Ajax‘s Ambitions: A Balancing Act between Realism adn Aspiration
Ajax’s Technical Director, Alex Kroes, believes a second or third-place finish this season would be a remarkable achievement for the club. While acknowledging the tight race for the Eredivisie title, Kroes emphasizes the significant progress Ajax has made since last season.
Currently trailing PSV by four points and with FC Utrecht hot on their heels, Kroes remains pragmatic. “It’s a very close race,” he stated on Ziggo Sport’s Rondo. “We need to be realistic about the situation, both in terms of our position and our performance.”
Wesley Sneijder, also present on the show, agreed, highlighting the volatility of the league standings. Kroes, however, stressed the positive trajectory Ajax has embarked on, noting the club’s improved stability and on-field performance.
While acknowledging the public’s desire to discuss title aspirations, Kroes maintains his focus on achieving the club’s primary objective: securing a Champions League spot. “Our ambition is clear: to maximize our potential and qualify for the Champions League,” he asserted.
This stance contrasts with the viewpoint of Marco van Basten, who believes ajax should aim for nothing less than first place. “Being number one is what Ajax should strive for,” the former striker declared. “It’s part of the club’s DNA.”
kroes, while acknowledging the possibility of winning the title, reiterates the importance of recognizing the club’s journey and the significant strides made. He points to the significant gap Ajax faced last season, trailing both PSV and Feyenoord by a considerable margin.
“we were thirty points behind Feyenoord and PSV in June 2024,” Kroes explained. “They qualified for the Champions League and had the financial resources to buy and sell players. We had limited funds, selling for €60 million and reinvesting only €3.5 million. We’ve made the most of our resources and taken significant steps forward. We’re incredibly close, but it’s a delicate balance. We still have work to do.”
Despite the ongoing debate, Ajax’s performance this season has been impressive, showcasing their resilience and determination. Weather they ultimately clinch the title or secure a Champions League berth, their progress under Kroes’ leadership is undeniable.

Balancing act: A Conversation with Dutch Football Legend, Pierre Littbarski
Ajax’s ambitions for this season have been a hot topic amongst fans and pundits alike. With the Eredivisie title race heating up,Ajax Technical director Alex Kroes has expressed a pragmatic stance, prioritizing a secure Champions League berth over chasing the elusive championship crown. To delve deeper into this debate, we sat down with Dutch football legend and former Ajax player, Pierre Littbarski.
Moderator: Pierre, thanks for joining us. Alex Kroes has stated that a second or third-place finish this season would be a remarkable achievement for Ajax, given the notable gap they faced last season. Do you agree with this assessment?
Littbarski: I understand Kroes’ point of view. Last season was indeed tough for Ajax, trailing both PSV and feyenoord by a considerable margin. However, ajax is a club with a winning mentality, and aiming for anything less than first place seems a bit uncharacteristic.
Moderator: But considering the financial constraints Kroes mentioned, cutting back on spending while competing against financially stronger rivals, doesn’t a more realistic approach make sense?
Littbarski:
Financial realities are always a factor, but Ajax has always found ways to overachieve, to punch above their weight. Look at their history, their youth academy, the talent they nurture. I believe they have the potential to challenge for the title, even with budgetary limitations.
Moderator: Marco van Basten has voiced a strong opinion, stating that ajax “should strive for nothing less than first place.” Do you think that puts undue pressure on the team, especially with the current league standings?
Littbarski: Pressure is part and parcel of playing for a club like Ajax. The expectations are always high, and they have a history of success to live up to. I wouldn’t say van Basten’s viewpoint puts undue pressure. Instead, it reminds the players of the club’s ambitions and the legacy they represent.
Moderator: kroes emphasizes the importance of Champions League qualification. How crucial is that for Ajax, both financially and in terms of attracting top talent?
Littbarski:
Champions League qualification is paramount for any top European club, and Ajax is no exception. It provides significant financial benefits and exposure on the biggest stage. Moreover, it’s a powerful tool to attract and retain top talents who aspire to compete at the highest level.
Moderator: It seems we have a clash of perspectives – a pragmatic approach from Kroes versus a more idealistic vision from van basten. Who do you think has the better argument?
Littbarski: It’s a delicate balance. While I respect Kroes’ pragmatic viewpoint, I believe Ajax should always strive for the highest possible finish. The club’s DNA is built on ambition and attacking football.
Moderator: What are your thoughts on Ajax’s performance this season? Do you see them as genuine title contenders?
Littbarski: They’ve shown glimpses of their potential, moments of brilliance interspersed with inconsistencies. They have a talented squad, but they need to find more consistency.
Can they win the title? It’s a tight race. They’ll need to maintain their performance level and hope PSV and Utrecht slip up. It promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the season.
Moderator: What a phenomenal insight, Pierre! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
