A Rising Star: Alberto Llera Serrano’s Triumphant 2024 and ambitions for the Future
Alberto Llera Serrano, a kayaking prodigy from Ribadesella, capped off an exceptional 2024 with remarkable international achievements in the under-23 category. His outstanding performance has earned him well-deserved recognition, including the prestigious title of Best Male Athlete of the Year at the upcoming gala del Deporte Riosellano on January 31st.
“Receiving this award is incredibly gratifying, especially considering the caliber of athletes in our region,” shared Llera Serrano, a member of the Club Piragüismo El Sella. He is set to join the Spanish national team’s training camp in Seville on January 8th, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Llera Serrano’s 2024 campaign was highlighted by his bronze medal win at the European Under-23 Sprint Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. He clocked an impressive 1:39.896 in the K-1 500 meters, finishing behind Hungary’s Hunor Hidvegi (1:38.116) and Slovakia’s Matvz Manfreda (1:38.743).
His success continued at the world Under-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he teamed up with Álex Graneri, Sergio de la Peña, and Carlos García Ruiz to secure another bronze medal in the P-4 500 meters. Their time of 1:20.998 placed them behind Germany (1:19.435) and Poland (1:20.309).
Looking ahead to 2025, Llera Serrano’s primary focus is on excelling at the World Under-23 Sprint Championships. He also harbors aspirations of competing in senior-level events.
In addition to his international ambitions, Llera Serrano aims to participate in the Descenso Internacional del Sella on August 9th. After missing the previous edition, he is eager to experience the thrill of the iconic race once again, perhaps in a K-2 boat with a teammate.
“If I can find a partner to join me,I’d love to paddle the Sella in a K-2,” he stated,showcasing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season.

Alberto: Thank you so much for having me. Its an honor to be here.
Moderator: 2024 was a phenomenal year for you, Alberto. Two bronze medals at the Under-23 European and World Championships, a shaved second off your personal best in the K-1 500 meters… it’s truly remarkable. How are you feeling after such an impressive season?
Alberto: I’m still pinching myself.It’s been a whirlwind of training, competitions, and achieving goals I set for myself. Honestly, it feels surreal to see it all pay off.
Moderator: Indeed, your dedication is evident. Now, you’ve mentioned aspirations to compete in senior-level events. That’s a big leap. What are some of the challenges you anticipate
facing as you transition to a more competitive landscape?
Alberto: The senior level is a whole new ball game. The competition is fiercer, the pace is faster, and the expectations are higher. But I’m up for the challenge. I’m working hard to improve my strength, endurance, and technique to be ready to face the best in the world.
Moderator: I understand you’re also looking forward to the Descenso Internacional del Sella in August. This iconic race holds a special place in your heart, doesn’t it?
Alberto: Absolutely! It’s a race that embodies the spirit and passion of our region.I missed it last year, and I can’t wait to paddle the Sella river again.
Moderator: There’s talk about you possibly teaming up with another kayaker for a K-2 run. What can you tell us about that possibility?
Alberto: I’m hoping to find a partner who shares my dedication and drive. The K-2 is a different experience entirely, with a whole new dynamic. It would be an unbelievable possibility to learn and grow alongside another talented paddler.
Moderator: You certainly have a luminous future ahead, Alberto. Before we wrap up,what message would you like to share with young athletes who are just starting thier journey?
Alberto: Never give up on your dreams,no matter how big they seem. Hard work, dedication, and believing in yourself can take you a long way. And always remember to enjoy the journey!
