Chía’s badminton athletes are making waves at the festival de festivales, showcasing remarkable skill and determination in the individual category group stage. Mayor Leonardo Donoso was present to witness the first day of competition, cheering on the 11 talented players representing the Municipal Institute of Recreation and Sports’ training program.
Their dedication and hard work have already yielded notable results.Mathias Jurado dominated his matches, securing victories against Andrés Mesa of Antioquia (21-13, 21-7) and Jeremias Medina of Bello (21-11, 21-6). Similarly, Felipe Bastos triumphed over Jerónimo Vélez of Envigado with a decisive 21-0, 21-0 score, followed by a 21-3, 21-7 win against Ángel Moncada of Bello.
Manuela Muñoz, Emilio Sierra, David Bastos, and Juan Manuel Muñoz also delivered outstanding performances, each securing victories against their respective opponents. Antonia Salgado and Jerónimo Sánchez continued the winning streak, showcasing their prowess on the court. Sofia Sierra emerged victorious against Luciana Muñoz of Itagüi with a commanding 21-2, 21-6 score.While Martín Chacón and Jefferson Ravelo faced tough competition,their participation highlights the depth of talent within Chía’s badminton program.
The competition continues with group stage matches in the sub 9,sub 11,sub 13,and sub 15 categories. The afternoon may see the commencement of the doubles elimination rounds.

This past weekend, Chía’s young athletes showcased their talent at the Festival de Festivales, securing numerous victories in the individual category group stage. we’re thrilled to have Coach Carlos Gómez, a seasoned badminton coach with decades of experience nurturing young talent, join us today to discuss these impressive performances.

Coach Gómez: Thank you for having me. It’s always exciting to see young athletes shine, especially when they represent a program as dedicated as Chía’s.
The results from the Festival de Festivales are truly remarkable. Mathias Jurado’s dominance,such as,with convincing wins against Andrés Mesa and Jeremias Medina,speaks volumes about his skill and tactical approach. What are your thoughts on his performance?
Coach Gómez: Mathias has been a standout player for some time now.He’s got a natural talent for the game, but what truly sets him apart is his work ethic.He’s constantly striving to improve, both technically and mentally. Those victories are a testament to his dedication.
Felipe Bastos also delivered an impressive performance, securing a rare double bagel win against Jerónimo Vélez. Do you think these types of decisive victories signify a broader strength within the program?
Coach Gómez: Absolutely. These results reflect the quality of training our athletes receive at the Municipal Institute of Recreation and Sports. We put a strong emphasis on developing well-rounded players, focusing not just on physical skills but also on mental fortitude and strategic thinking.
it’s not just Jurado and Bastos who are shining. Several other Chía athletes, like Manuela Muñoz, Emilio Sierra, and Sofia Sierra, also secured impressive victories. What does this widespread success tell you about the future of badminton in Chía?
Coach Gómez: It’s incredibly encouraging. To see so many athletes performing at this level suggests a radiant future for Chía badminton. These youngsters are the future of the sport, and I’m confident they’ll continue to make waves in the coming years.
Of course, not every match resulted in a victory. Martín Chacón and jefferson Ravelo faced tougher competition. How do you view these experiences within the context of the overall development of these athletes?
Coach Gómez: Every match, win or lose, is a learning experience. It’s through these challenges that athletes grow and refine their skills. Martín and Jefferson are talented players who will undoubtedly learn from these experiences and come back stronger.
The Festival de Festivales continues with doubles elimination rounds and culminating in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals on January 7th.What are your expectations for the Chía team in the remaining stages?
Coach Gómez: My expectations are high,but more importantly,I hope to see our athletes compete with heart and determination,regardless of the outcome. I believe they have the potential to achieve great things, and I’m excited to witness their journey.
