This past weekend, Valladolid became the epicenter of archery excellence as it hosted the Castilla y León Indoor Archery Championship.Archers from across the region gathered too showcase their skills, with participants ranging from seasoned veterans to rising stars. Among the competitors were Beatriz Manuel, Alejandro, and Héctor Glez. Manuel, all representing Arco Club Valladolid. While Beatriz and Alejandro competed in the senior compound bow category, Héctor, the youngest of the trio, participated in the junior division.
The event kicked off with the qualifying round, where Alejandro delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 583 points to secure the top spot.Héctor followed closely with 572 points, earning him seventh place, while Beatriz scored 520 points, placing her ninth and just shy of advancing to the elimination phase.
As the competition progressed, both brothers advanced past the round of 16, but their paths diverged in the quarterfinals. Héctor faced a tough challenge and was unable to progress further, ultimately finishing in seventh place and missing the chance to defend his title from the previous season. Alejandro, however, demonstrated remarkable consistency, breezing through the semifinals and securing a spot in the gold medal match. His stellar performance culminated in a well-deserved victory, earning him the title of Absolute Champion of Castilla y León.
For the Manuel family, the weekend was a mix of triumph and disappointment. Their next major challenge awaits in February,when they will head to the regional capital to compete in the Spanish Indoor Archery Championship. Alejandro Manuel: It was an unbelievable experience. The qualifying round was intense, but I managed to score 583 points, which gave me the top spot. From there,I focused on maintaining consistency. The semifinals were challenging, but I stayed composed and secured my place in the gold medal match. Winning the title was the culmination of months of hard work and readiness.
Moderator: Your brother, Héctor, also competed but fell short in the quarterfinals. How do you balance family dynamics with the competitive nature of the sport?
alejandro Manuel: It’s definitely a unique dynamic. Héctor is incredibly talented, and I’m proud of his performance. We support each other, but when we’re on the field, it’s all about competition. It’s healthy rivalry, and it pushes both of us to be better.
Moderator: Speaking of Héctor, he was the defending champion but couldn’t retain his title this year. Do you think the pressure of defending a title played a role in his performance?
Alejandro manuel: It’s possible. Defending a title comes with its own set of challenges. Héctor is still young, and this experience will only make him stronger. He has a luminous future ahead, and I have no doubt he’ll bounce back.
Moderator: Beatriz Manuel, another member of your family, also competed but narrowly missed advancing to the elimination phase. What are your thoughts on her performance?
Alejandro Manuel: Beatriz is a fierce competitor, and she gave it her all. Archery is a sport where even the smallest margins can make a big difference. She’s already looking ahead to the next competition, and I know she’ll come back stronger.
Moderator: The Manuel family is clearly a powerhouse in archery. What’s next for you and your siblings?
Alejandro manuel: Our next big challenge is the Spanish Indoor Archery Championship in Febuary. It’s the final indoor competition of the season, and we’re all training hard to make an impact.
Moderator: Let’s shift gears a bit. Archery is frequently enough seen as a niche sport. What do you think can be done to increase its popularity and attract more participants?
Alejandro Manuel: I think showcasing the sport through events like the Castilla y León championship is a great start. Social media and streaming platforms also play a huge role in reaching a wider audience. At the grassroots level, introducing archery in schools and communities can spark interest from a young age.
