Rising Stars: A Conversation with NBA Legend, Kenny “The Jet” Smith
This month saw two young stars shine bright, claiming the NBA’s coveted Rookie of the Month award for December. Washington Wizards’ Alexandre Sarr dominated the east, while the New Orleans Pelicans’ Yves Missi took the West.
Joining us to discuss these rising stars and their impact is none other than former NBA champion and TNT analyst, Kenny “The Jet” Smith. Kenny, thanks for joining us!
Kenny: Always a pleasure to be here, sharing my thoughts on the future of the league.
Me: Let’s dive right in. Alexandre Sarr, averaging 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and almost two blocks a game, showcased tremendous growth in December. What did you see in Sarr’s performance that stood out?
Kenny: You know, Sarr’s raw talent has been evident since draft day. But this month, he really started putting it all together. That developing long-range shooting is a huge asset for a big man. It adds another dimension to his game, making him a threat both inside and outside the paint.
Me: Absolutely.
And he’s doing it for a Wizards team that hasn’t been performing at its best. It speaks volumes about his character and determination. Now, shifting our focus to the West, Yves missi has been a beacon of hope for the injury-plagued Pelicans.
Kenny: Missi is a straight-up warrior! With Zion Williamson sidelined and the Pelicans needing someone to step up, he answered the call. Triple-doubles aren’t easy to come by in this league, but 11.2 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks are remarkable numbers for a rookie.
Me: Do you think Missi will be able to maintain this level of performance throughout the season? The NBA is a marathon, not a sprint.
Kenny: Time will tell, but his work ethic and commitment suggest he’s in it for the long haul. Remember, some rookies hit the “rookie wall” mid-season. It’s all about maintaining that focus and adapting to the physical demands of the league.
Me: Good points. Looking at the other rookies who received votes, guys like Stephon castle, Donovan Clingan, and Zach Edey, it truly seems this draft class is exceptionally talented.
Kenny: No doubt! This crop of rookies is special.
They’re already making their presence felt. It’s going to be exciting to see how they develop over the next few years. The future of the NBA is looking bright.
Me: Thanks for sharing your insights, Kenny.
We all know those early Rookie of the Month awards can often signal a stellar career. Do you have any predictions for Sarr and Missi’s future?
Kenny: It’s early, but I see both sarr and Missi developing into All-Star caliber players.
They have the size, skill, and mentality to succeed at the highest level.
The key will be consistent hard work, good coaching, and staying healthy. If those things fall into place, they have the potential to be great.
Me: I couldn’t agree more. It’s definitely an exciting time to be an NBA fan!
