While acknowledging Santander’s struggles against right-handed pitching, Kline emphasizes the limited options remaining in free agency, stating, “Boston wasn’t going to splurge enough for (Juan) Soto or (Teoscar) Hernández. (Anthony) Santander was always the best option for the gardens.”
Santander’s offensive prowess has steadily improved over the past three seasons, culminating in his breakout 2024 campaign. He is seeking a multi-year contract worth a considerable sum, potentially reaching $100 million.

Reggie Jackson: It’s a head-scratcher, isn’t it?
You’d think a player with that kind of power and production would be snatched up promptly.
This market might be a bit tighter then usual, and teams may be hesitant to commit big money to players
north of 30 years old. But Santander is a proven bat, and those don’t just grow on trees.
Exactly! We mentioned the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox as potential landing spots. How do you see Santander fitting into each of these teams?
Reggie Jackson:
Both teams have their appeal. With the yankees,you have the bright lights,the passionate fanbase,and a chance to compete for a World Series title right away.
yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field could also play to Santander’s power.
But the red Sox offer a real prospect to be “the guy,”
the cornerstone of their lineup. they need power, and Santander can provide that.
Plus, they’ve been a little quieter in free agency than some anticipated,
so they might be more willing to meet his contract demands.
Some analysts have expressed concern about Santander’s struggles against right-handed pitching. Do you think this is a legitimate concern, or is it something he can overcome?
Reggie Jackson:
Every hitter has weaknesses. The key is to minimize those weaknesses and maximize your strengths.
Santander has shown he can hit lefties out of the park,
and with the right coaching and work ethic, I believe he can improve against right-handers.
Don’t forget, hitting is a constant adjustment,
a battle against yourself as much as the pitcher.

My gut feeling says Boston. They have the need, the payroll flexibility, and could offer him a chance to be a true star.
But don’t count out the yankees. They always find a way to make things interesting.
