Atlanta Braves Add Veteran Slugger Garrett Cooper on Minor League Deal
The Atlanta braves have bolstered their roster depth by signing veteran first baseman Garrett Cooper to a minor league contract, according to reports from FanSided’s Robert Murray. The agreement, announced on January 12, 2025, includes an invitation to spring training, giving Cooper a chance to compete for a spot on the Braves’ 26-man roster.
Cooper, a seasoned MLB player, spent the 2024 season with the Chicago Cubs and boston Red Sox. After being released by Boston, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles but ultimately finished the year in the minor leagues. Despite his recent struggles, Cooper brings valuable experience and a proven track record of hitting for power to the Braves institution.
This marks the second consecutive year Cooper has signed a minor league deal before spring training. In 2023, he transitioned from the Miami Marlins to the San Diego Padres.
Cooper’s performance in 2024 was limited to 36 games, where he recorded a .206 batting average, .267 on-base percentage, and .299 slugging percentage. While these numbers are below his career averages, Cooper has demonstrated the ability to be a productive hitter in the past.
The Braves’ signing of Cooper comes at a relatively low cost. His salary in 2024 dipped below a million dollars, and his minor league deal with Atlanta likely reflects a similar figure.
With Matt Olson firmly entrenched as the starting first baseman, cooper’s path to the Braves’ major league roster may involve a stint with their Triple-A affiliate, the Gwinnett stripers. However, his versatility as a designated hitter could provide him with opportunities to contribute at the MLB level.
cooper’s experience and power potential make him a worthwhile gamble for the Braves. If he can rediscover his form during spring training, he could prove to be a valuable asset for the team in 2025.
Breaking Down the braves’ Garrett Cooper Gamble: An Exclusive Interview
The Atlanta Braves have made a low-risk, high-reward move, signing veteran slugger Garrett Cooper to a minor league contract. To get a deeper understanding of this move, we’ve brought in former MLB first baseman Mark Reynolds, known for his own powerful bat and career journey through various teams, much like Cooper.
Mark, thanks for joining us. What are your initial thoughts on this signing?
Mark Reynolds: “I think it’s a smart move by the Braves.Cooper’s had some good years in the league, and you’re always looking for that extra pop off the bench, especially with a DH spot available. Plus, you can never have too much depth, right?”
There’s there’s no doubt whatsoever Cooper brings power potential, but his 2024 numbers weren’t exactly stellar. Do you see this as a redemption prospect for him?
Mark Reynolds: “Absolutely.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all a player needs. New team, new coaches, maybe a fresh approach to training. If Cooper can tap into that experience he has, rediscover his timing, I could definitely see him making a contribution at the MLB level. He’s shown he can hit in this league before.”
Let’s be honest though, getting consistent playing time behind Matt Olson on a strong Braves team won’t be easy. What are the realistic chances of Cooper making the opening day roster?
Mark Reynolds: “I think Triple-A is highly likely the starting point. He needs to prove he’s healthy, back in form, and hitting consistently. But the Braves value depth, so if he performs well, a call-up wouldn’t surprise me. And who knows, Olson could get nicked up; injuries happen in baseball. Cooper needs to be ready.”
You spent your career bouncing around different teams. What advice would you give Cooper as he tries to find his footing with the Braves organization?
Mark Reynolds: “Be a professional, work hard, keep your head down, and focus on what you can control. Don’t worry about what’s happening around you; just focus on getting your swing right and making the most of every opportunity. Show them you’re a valuable asset, and the rest will take care of itself.”
