Kwara State Badminton Boosted by newly Certified Coach
Kayode Mope, the head coach of the Kwara State Badminton Team, recently achieved a significant milestone by earning the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Level 1 coaching certification.This prestigious qualification equips mope with advanced knowledge and skills that he is eager to share with his players,promising a positive impact on the state’s badminton program.
mope, a former international player himself, understands the importance of nurturing young talent. He has implemented several initiatives aimed at identifying promising badminton players who could represent Kwara State at national competitions like the National Youth Games and other junior championships.
“Obtaining the BWF Level 1 Certificate is a tremendous accomplishment,” Mope stated. “The insights I’ve gained will be invaluable in developing my players’ abilities.”
Mope’s vision extends beyond the court. He plans to conduct training programs for Games Masters and Mistresses in both primary and secondary schools across the state. This proactive approach aims to unearth hidden talent and provide a pathway for aspiring badminton players.”My goal is to create a robust system for identifying and nurturing young talent,” Mope explained. “By training Games Masters and Mistresses, we can ensure that promising players receive the guidance and support they need to excel.”
Along with his youth progress programs, Mope is also organizing various badminton championships for primary and secondary school students. These competitions provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, gain experience, and compete at a higher level.
Mope’s message to athletes of all levels is clear: dedication and discipline are key to success. He assures them that the Technical Department is committed to providing the necessary support and guidance to help them reach their full potential.
with his extensive experience as both a player and a coach, Mope is confident in his ability to lead the Kwara State Badminton Team to new heights. He believes his expertise makes him well-suited to handle even the most demanding coaching roles,including possibly leading the National Team in the future.
The BWF Level 1 coaching course, held in Abuja last December, saw the participation of 13 coaches, including four women, highlighting the growing interest and involvement of women in badminton coaching.

Moderator: It’s our pleasure! your recent achievement of the BWF Level 1 certification is a significant milestone, not just for you but for badminton in Kwara State. How is this new qualification going to impact your coaching and the overall progress of the state’s badminton program?
Coach Mope: Absolutely,I’m incredibly proud to have earned this certification. It’s been a journey of rigorous training and knowledge acquisition. This level 1 certification equips me with a deeper understanding of the game’s technicalities, advanced training methodologies, and player development strategies. I see this as a tool to elevate the standard of coaching in Kwara. It’s about empowering our players, from the grassroots level to those aspiring to compete nationally and internationally.
Moderator: You’ve always been passionate about nurturing young talent. It’s evident in your initiatives to identify promising players for national competitions and your plans to train Games Masters and Mistresses across schools. Can you elaborate on these initiatives and the vision behind them?
Coach Mope: my vision is simple: to create a sustainable pipeline of badminton talent in Kwara State. We already have talented individuals, but we need a robust system to identify and nurture them. Training Games Masters and Mistresses in schools is key. They are often the first point of contact for budding athletes. Equipping them with the knowledge and techniques to spot potential and provide basic training can be transformative. We are also organizing badminton championships at the primary and secondary school levels. These provide young athletes with a platform to showcase their skills, learn from each other, and experience the thrill of competition.
Moderator: That’s a holistic approach, and I applaud your commitment.
But let’s talk about your own journey. You’ve transitioned from a successful international player to a dedicated coach. What are some of the key learnings from your experience as a player that you now incorporate into your coaching style?
Coach Mope: Playing at the international level taught me the importance of discipline,dedication,and relentless pursuit of excellence. These are the values I instill in my players, nonetheless of their skill level. Badminton, like any sport, demands commitment, both physically and mentally.
I also understand firsthand the pressures and challenges athletes face. I strive to create a supportive and encouraging surroundings where players feel comfortable pushing their limits and learning from their mistakes.
Moderator: Now,Coach Mope,your ambitions extend beyond Kwara State. You’ve expressed interest in perhaps leading the national team in the future. Is that something you still see as a possibility down the line?
Coach Mope: Absolutely.I believe my experience as both a player and now a qualified coach, combined with my dedication to developing young talent, positions me well to potentially contribute at the national level in the future.Representating my country is a dream, and guiding young athletes to achieve greatness on the international stage is a goal I aspire to fulfill.

My advice is simple: work hard, stay focused, and never give up on your dreams. Badminton, like life, is full of challenges, but perseverance and passion will see you through. Surround yourself with supportive coaches and mentors, learn from your experiences, and always strive to improve.
