Discovering the Thrill of Competitive Badminton

“Do you play sports?” It’s a question⁤ I’m often asked. As I was ten, my answer has always been, “I play badminton.” ‌This often elicits a‌ surprised look. “Isn’t badminton something you play on vacation?” While casual backyard ‍badminton can be ⁣fun, professional badminton is a entirely different beast. Played indoors, it ⁢adheres to strict rules, utilizes defined court lines, and encompasses various match types: singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Each format demands its own strategic approach, while power and speed remain paramount. In fact, the⁢ fastest smash ever recorded ‌clocked in at a staggering 565 kilometers per hour, solidifying badminton’s position as the ‌world’s fastest racket sport.

My badminton journey began when my father took me to an open house. I was searching ⁢for a sport that resonated with⁤ me, something beyond⁢ the ⁤typical choices like soccer or field hockey. The energy I felt on the court was undeniable; I knew I had found my passion. ‌Nearly ⁣two decades later, that passion still ⁣burns bright. Through dedicated training and countless matches, I’ve progressed to become a⁣ member ‍of team 1 in the 5th division ⁣at BC Leiden. For the past⁣ eight years, BC Leiden has been my badminton home. This club strikes a perfect balance between camaraderie and⁢ competitive spirit, offering opportunities for players of ⁤all levels to‍ thrive. The club’s welcoming atmosphere, comprised of a diverse group⁢ of individuals, makes both on-court competition and off-court socializing truly enjoyable. We train three⁢ times a week at the Vlietland College in Leiden, which also houses our club bar. After training sessions, it’s common to see players lingering, catching up and enjoying each other’s company. Mondays are dedicated to recreational players,Wednesdays feature two training groups for advanced players, and BC Leiden boasts six competitive teams, spanning divisions 7 to 5. Notably, four of these teams currently hold second place in their respective leagues!

Badminton is a sport I ‍wholeheartedly ⁤recommend to everyone. It’s an excellent way to stay ‍active, meet new people, and experience the thrill of competition.
