in a thrilling encounter during the 20th round of La Liga, Barcelona managed to secure a draw against Getafe, despite initially taking the lead with a goal from Jules Kounde in the 9th minute. However, their advantage was short-lived as Mauro Arambarri equalized in the 34th minute. This result further widened the gap between Barcelona and league leaders Real Madrid, leaving club president Joan Laporta visibly upset.
Laporta’s frustration stemmed from a controversial incident in the closing stages of the match, where he believed a penalty should have been awarded to Kounde. The referee remained unmoved, and VAR did not intervene, leading to a bitter end for Laporta and the Barcelona camp.
“The officiating in the Getafe match was disgraceful. The failure to award a penalty is nothing short of a scandal. It’s a scandal, and I’ll keep saying it,” Laporta expressed vehemently.
This incident is part of a recurring pattern where Barcelona officials have voiced their dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions in La Liga. Last season, similar complaints where frequent, with accusations that referees were biased against Barcelona and favored Real Madrid.

Exclusive Interview wiht Xavi Hernández: Refereeing Controversies, barcelona’s Draw, and la Liga’s Future
Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to another edition of Sports Pulse, where we dive deep into the latest happenings in the world of sports. Today, we have a very special guest—none other than Barcelona legend and former coach, Xavi Hernández. Xavi, thank you for joining us.
Xavi: thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss football, especially when it involves my beloved Barcelona.
Moderator: Let’s jump right into it.Barcelona’s recent 1-1 draw against Getafe has sparked a lot of controversy, particularly around the refereeing decisions. Club president Joan Laporta called the failure to award a penalty to Jules Kounde a “scandal.” What’s your take on this?
Xavi: Look, I understand Laporta’s frustration. When you’re in the heat of the moment, especially in a tight title race, every decision feels monumental. From what I’ve seen, Kounde’s incident coudl have gone either way. There was contact, but was it enough for a penalty? that’s subjective. What bothers me more is the inconsistency in refereeing across La Liga. This isn’t the first time Barcelona has felt hard done by, and it won’t be the last unless somthing changes.
Moderator: You mentioned inconsistency. This seems to be a recurring theme in La Liga. Last season,Barcelona officials accused referees of favoring Real Madrid. Do you think there’s any truth to these claims?
Xavi: (laughs) That’s a loaded question! I’ll say this: every club feels victimized by referees at some point. It’s part of the game. But when these complaints become a pattern, it’s worth asking why.Is it bias? Or is it a lack of proper training and resources for referees? I lean toward the latter. VAR was supposed to solve these issues, but it’s clear that even with technology, human error persists.
Moderator: Speaking of VAR,do you think it’s being used effectively in La Liga?
Xavi: not at all. VAR was introduced to eliminate clear and obvious errors, but it feels like it’s creating more confusion than clarity. The problem is that referees are still hesitant to overturn their own decisions, even when the evidence is staring them in the face.In the Getafe match, for example, VAR didn’t even intervene. that’s baffling. If we’re going to use technology, let’s use it properly.
Moderator: Let’s shift gears a bit. This draw has widened the gap between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Do you think Barcelona can still catch up in the title race?
Xavi: Absolutely. It’s still early days, and La Liga is notoriously unpredictable.Real Madrid is in great form, but football is a game of momentum. One injury, one bad result, and the whole dynamic changes. Barcelona has the quality to turn things around, but they need to focus on their own game rather than external factors like refereeing.
Moderator: That’s a great point. Xavi, what changes would you like to see in La Liga to improve the overall quality and fairness of the competition?
Xavi: First, we need better-trained referees. They should have access to the same level of coaching and analysis as players and managers. Second, VAR protocols need to be streamlined. Clear guidelines on when and how to intervene would go a long way. And third, I’d love to see more transparency. If referees are allowed to explain their decisions post-match, it would help fans and clubs understand the reasoning behind controversial calls.
Moderator: Wise words as always, Xavi. Thank you for your insights. Before we wrap up, I’d like to open the floor to our readers. What do you think about the refereeing in La Liga? Do you agree with Xavi’s suggestions for advancement? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
Xavi: Thank you, and thank you to the readers.Let’s keep the conversation going. Football is nothing without its fans.
