The MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg basketball team began the new year with a disappointing loss against Ewe baskets Oldenburg, falling 64:70. This defeat mirrored a recurring theme for the team this season: a strong defensive effort undermined by a lackluster offense.
Despite a valiant effort in the final quarter, where they closed a 15-point deficit, the Giants ultimately fell short. Coach John Patrick expressed his frustration with the team’s performance, particularly their inability to secure rebounds and their stagnant ball movement. this resulted in a reliance on desperate shots, highlighting a glaring weakness that has plagued the team throughout the season.
One telling statistic from the game was the Giants’ dismal free throw percentage, converting only three out of 13 attempts. This proved costly in the tightly contested final minutes, where they briefly took the lead at 60:59. Their three-point shooting was also inconsistent for much of the game, although players like jacob Patrick (14 points) and Ezra Manjon (18 points) eventually found their rythm.
Justin Jaworski emerged as the difference-maker for Oldenburg, scoring an impressive 23 points. Meanwhile, the Giants were without Hunter Maldonado, who sat out due to foot problems. His absence, coupled with the ongoing recovery of Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson from a knee injury, underscores the team’s need for reinforcements, particularly players who can consistently contribute offensively.
The Giants face a quick turnaround, traveling over 500 kilometers to Charleroi, Belgium for a Fiba Europe Cup game against local team Belfius Mons-Hainaut. After securing two victories in the Top 16 group phase, they will be looking to maintain their momentum despite the challenges they face.
Can the Giants Rebound? A Conversation with Coach Theo Papadopoulos
Welcome back to Courtside Chat! Today, I’m joined by former Greek national team coach adn basketball analyst, Theo Papadopoulos, to dissect the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg’s recent loss against Ewe Baskets Oldenburg.
Coach Papadopoulos, thanks again for joining us. The Giants started the new year with a tough loss, a familiar theme this season. What were your initial thoughts watching the game?
Theo Papadopoulos: Thanks for having me. It was a frustrating watch,no doubt. While Ludwigsburg showed glimpses of their defensive prowess, their offensive struggles continue to be a major concern. A 3-out-of-13 free throw percentage is inexcusable at this level, especially in a tight game like that.
Absolutely, those missed free throws were critical, particularly in the closing minutes when Ludwigsburg briefly took the lead. They fought hard, chipping away at a 15-point deficit, but ultimately couldn’t overcome their offensive woes. What strategic adjustments could Coach Patrick consider to address their lack of ball movement and consistent scoring?
Theo Papadopoulos: I agree. Coach Patrick needs to find a way to inject more fluidity into their offense. They appear to be overly reliant on individual playmaking, which leads to stagnant possessions and rushed shots. Implementing more movement off the ball, utilizing screens effectively, and encouraging dribble penetration to create passing lanes could be effective.
Interestingly, Jacob Patrick and Ezra Manjon seemed to find their rhythm late in the game.
Theo Papadopoulos: They did, but it felt too late. They need to establish that rhythm earlier in the game.Consistency is key.
It’s also vital to note that the Giants are playing without Hunter Maldonado due to injury, and Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson is also still recovering. How significant is the absence of Maldonado, and do you think reinforcements are needed?
Theo Papadopoulos: Maldonado’s absence is definitely felt. He’s a proven scorer and dynamic player. Ogungbemi-Jackson’s presence would also bolster their depth and offensive capabilities.Reinforcements are essential if Ludwigsburg wants to be a serious contender.
Now, looking ahead, the Giants face a tough turnaround, traveling to Charleroi for a FIBA Europe Cup game. How do you see them performing with such a speedy turnaround and a challenging opponent?
Theo Papadopoulos: It’s a tough ask, especially considering the travel and fatigue. Though, I believe this could be a good opportunity for them to refocus. They need to forget about this loss and concentrate on executing their game plan against Belfius Mons-Hainaut. A win in Belgium could be the shot of confidence they need.
Thank you, Coach Papadopoulos, for your insightful analysis. What are your thoughts, readers? Can the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg turn things around? Will they find the offensive spark they so desperately need? share your opinions in the comments below!
