Drawing Up teh Future: A Conversation with Basketball Legend Lisa Leslie on Coaching Kids
Welcome back, sports fans! Today, we’re thrilled to have a true icon of the game joining us, the legendary lisa leslie, four-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion. Lisa, welcome to the show!
Lisa leslie: Thanks for having me! It’s great to be here.
Let’s dive right in.This week, Christ-Roi Church announced they’re looking for a basketball coach for their youth program. As someone who’s dedicated their life to the sport, what are your thoughts on initiatives like this?
Lisa leslie: It’s fantastic! getting kids involved in sports at a young age is so critically important. Basketball teaches valuable life lessons like teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Plus, it’s just plain fun!
Absolutely! The program focuses on players aged 5-12. Do you think this age group is a good starting point for introducing basketball skills?
Lisa Leslie: Definitely.
You can start teaching basic dribbling and passing exercises to even the youngest kids. For the older ones, you can introduce more structured drills and even start incorporating some simple plays. It’s all about making it fun and engaging so they develop a love for the game.
The program is structured with hour-long sessions, a blend of drills, games, and “amiable” matches. What’s your take on that approach?
Lisa Leslie: (chuckles) I love the use of “amiable”! Striking a balance is key. You want to make sure kids are learning proper techniques, but also having a good time. Games and scrimmages are crucial for developing game sense and allowing them to apply what they’ve learned.
One thing that stood out to me is the emphasis on safety. That’s a primary concern for any youth program, wouldn’t you agree?
Lisa Leslie: Absolutely crucial. Coaches need to be properly trained in first aid and injury prevention. Ensuring a safe environment allows kids to focus on learning and enjoying the game without worrying about getting hurt.
The article mentions compensation starting at $20 an hour, commensurate with experience. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of coaching kids, beyond the pay?
Lisa Leslie: Nothing beats seeing that ”aha!” moment when a kid finally masters a new skill or scores their first basket. Witnessing their growth, both as athletes and individuals, is immensely rewarding.
We know you’re busy shaping the future of basketball through your work with the WNBA and various youth initiatives. What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this coaching position at Christ-Roi Church?
Lisa Leslie: If you’re passionate about basketball and enjoy working with kids, go for it! This could be a truly fulfilling experience. Remember to be patient, creative, and most importantly, have fun!
