The start of the new year saw both the second and third teams of Badmintonclub ‘t Pluumke ’67 in action, battling it out in away matches.
The second team faced a tough challenge in Tubbergen, traveling deep into Twente just days after the Christmas holidays. Despite the short turnaround, Sjoerd Krosenbrink was in top form, securing victories in all three of his matches. He teamed up with Mark ten Pas to win the men’s doubles,but ten Pas narrowly lost his singles match in a thrilling three-set encounter.
Erenda Kruisselbrink and Maud Smits struggled to find their rhythm, facing an off night where nothing seemed to click. However, Maud Smits rallied towards the end, partnering with Krosenbrink to clinch the mixed doubles.
Considering the long journey and late hour, the team opted to skip their usual post-match refreshments and headed straight home. Despite the challenges, they secured a hard-fought 5-3 victory, earning three valuable points for their return to the Achterhoek.

Astrid: Absolutely! It’s clear that fatigue played a factor, especially considering their decision to skip post-match celebrations. Still, securing those three points shows tremendous resilience. Sjoerd Krosenbrink’s performance especially stood out. Winning all three matches demonstrates his dedication and focus, even amidst travel exhaustion.
We saw some struggles from Erenda Kruisselbrink and Maud Smits, though. What do you attribute these challenges to?
Astrid: I think it might be attributed to a few factors. An off-day happens to every athlete.Perhaps the travel took its toll, and sometimes, the pressure of an away match can disrupt rhythm. However, Maud Smits showed excellent spirit by rallying and securing the mixed doubles victory with Krosenbrink. It’s crucial to acknowledge those moments of turn-around.
Moving on to the third team, their match against Varsseveld ended in a 4-4 draw. While a draw isn’t technically a loss, wouldn’t you say there’s a sense of unmet potential there?
Astrid: I agree. A draw frequently enough leaves a bittersweet feeling, especially when you consider how closely contested the match was.It highlights the competitive spirit of both teams and acknowledges that on any given day, any team can rise to the occasion. Nevertheless,striving for that extra point,that decisive victory,is crucial for confidence and league positioning.
