Finding Faith on the Field: A Conversation with Olympian Michael Johnson
Today, we’re venturing beyond the track and into a different arena: the realm of faith. Joining me is none other than Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson, a man who’s known for his incredible speed and determination, both on and off the field.Michael, thanks for joining me.
Michael Johnson: Thanks for having me.
Host: Now, Michael, the Alpha course, which is explored in this article, aims to provide a space for people to explore Christian faith. How do you think something like this, focused on dialog and reflection, resonates with the world of sports, often characterized by intense competition and individual achievement?
Michael Johnson: That’s a great question. I think there’s frequently enough this misconception that faith and athletics are mutually exclusive. But for me, my faith has always been a source of strength and guidance, both in training and competition. The discipline, the focus, the resilience needed on the track – those are qualities that are also nurtured by faith.
Host: The article highlights the Alpha Course’s emphasis on community, shared meals, and open discussions. Do you believe these elements are crucial, not only in exploring faith but also in fostering a sense of belonging within the competitive world of sports?
Michael Johnson: Absolutely. In any high-pressure environment, which sports definitely is, having a support system, a sense of community, is paramount. It’s not just about the wins and losses, but about having people who understand the sacrifices you make, who encourage you through the challenges, and celebrate your successes.
Host: The Alpha Course, as described, explores topics like “The Existence of a Higher Power” and ”The Identity of Jesus.” Do you think these are conversations that are accessible and relevant to athletes, many of whom might be grappling with questions of purpose and meaning in their own lives?
Michael Johnson: I think these are basic questions that everyone grapples with at some point in their lives, athletes included. The pressures of competition, the pursuit of excellence, can sometimes leave you questioning your own purpose and existence. Having a framework,a set of beliefs that offer viewpoint and meaning, can be incredibly grounding.
Host: The article mentions that the Alpha Course culminates in a weekend retreat. How do you think taking a step back from the intensity of training and competition could benefit athletes?
Michael Johnson: It’s essential. Athletes often operate in a bubble, focused solely on their sport. Stepping away, reflecting, connecting with others outside that bubble, can bring clarity and fresh perspective. It can help them re-center themselves, reconnect with their values, and return to their sport with renewed energy and motivation.
Host: Thank you for sharing your insights, Michael. this has been a fascinating conversation.
