French Biathlete Dominates Sprint in Oberhof
Paula Botetová of France secured a commanding victory in the women’s 7.5km sprint at the Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof, Germany. Botetová, a two-time junior world champion, showcased exceptional accuracy, achieving a clean shooting record, which proved crucial in her triumph. She finished a remarkable 31.1 seconds ahead of Norway’s Maren Kirkeeideo, who claimed second place, while Milena Todorovová of Bulgaria secured third place, trailing Botetová by 35 seconds.
Among the Slovakian contingent, Anastasia kuzminová delivered the best performance, finishing in 31st place with a time deficit of 2:10.7 minutes. Her teammates, Ema Kapustová and Mária Remeňová, faced challenges on the shooting range, each missing three and four targets respectively, resulting in 62nd and 64th place finishes.
Top Slovakian biathlete paulína Bátovská Fialková opted to skip the oberhof event, focusing rather on intensive training in Val Martel, Italy, in preparation for the second half of the season and the upcoming World Championships.
“This preparation is essential for the World Championships,” Bátovská Fialková stated in an interview with STVR. “Having missed the entire previous season, the training I’ve undertaken since March might not be sufficient.I need to enhance my endurance. While the World Cup in Ruhpolding will be demanding after this training camp, everything is geared towards peaking for the World Championships. My goal is to be in the best possible shape for the event,” she added.
The Biathlon World Championships are scheduled to take place in Lenzerheide from February 12th to 23rd.

Rising Star, Strategic Training: An Exclusive Interview with Biathlon Expert, Michael Gruber
Paula Botetová’s dominant performance in Oberhof has shaken up the Biathlon World Cup. Joining us today is Michael Gruber, former Olympic biathlete and respected commentator, to unpack this exciting win and discuss the strategies unfolding in this crucial season.
Michael,welcome to the show!
gruber: Thanks for having me.It’s always a pleasure to dive into the world of biathlon.
Let’s start with Botetová’s stunning victory. Clean shooting and a 31-second lead – what does this performance tell us about her potential?
Gruber: This is a serious statement from Botetová. she’s a two-time junior world champion, and we’ve seen glimpses of her talent, but this is a real breakthrough on the senior stage. The clean shooting is remarkable; it shows astonishing focus and technical mastery. If she can maintain this accuracy, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with at the upcoming World Championships
Speaking of the World Championships, we saw Paulina Bátovská Fialková skip this event in Oberhof to focus on training. Is this a smart move, considering her ambitious goals?
Gruber: Absolutely. Bátovská Fialková is proven on the world stage, but having missed last season, she needs to build up her endurance and fine-tune her form. The World Championships are her priority, so focusing on a targeted training block in Val Martell makes sense. It’s a strategic decision that could pay off handsomely.
But what about the Slovakian team as a whole? Kuzminová’s 31st place was respectable, but Kapustová and Remeňová struggled on the range. Can they get back on track?
Gruber: The Slovakian team has a lot of potential, but consistency is key in biathlon. Missing shots on the range is costly. They need to work on their mental game and their technical execution. If they can find that consistency, they have the talent to challenge for medals.
with nine races out of 21 complete, the World Cup standings are still wide open. Who do you see emerging as the frontrunners?
Gruber: It’s a tight race! Botetová’s win shakes things up, and we can’t discount experienced competitors like Maren Kirkeeido and Milena Todorovová.
The upcoming World Championships in Lenzerheide will be a defining point in the season. Who are your favorites, and what races are you looking forward to the most?
Gruber: The women’s sprint and pursuit races are always thrilling, and I expect fierce competition in the relays. botetová will be someone to watch, but don’t count out powerhouse nations like Norway and France. It’s going to be an epic showdown!
That’s a grate insight, Michael. We can’t wait for the action to unfold in Lenzerheide!
