freezing Temperatures Force Boden Races to Monday
Extreme cold is expected to grip Boden this Friday evening, with temperatures plummeting to around -25 degrees Celsius. This frigid weather has prompted organizers to postpone the scheduled races until Monday evening.
“When temperatures reach such lows, it can pose significant challenges for racing,” explains David Zimmer, the track manager at Bodentravets. “We’ve decided to move the races to Monday, when milder conditions are anticipated.”
This decision highlights the delicate balance between competition and animal welfare in the world of harness racing. While horses are generally more resilient to cold than humans, there’s a limit to their tolerance.
The Impact of Cold on Equine Athletes
Veterinarian Karl Zötterman, who specializes in equine sports medicine, emphasizes the need for caution when temperatures drop. “While horses can withstand cold better than we can, there’s limited research on their precise cold tolerance threshold,” he says.Zötterman points out that factors like humidity and wind chill also play a role. Moreover, transporting horses in extreme cold can be notably risky.Recognizing the knowledge gap, the swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is currently conducting a research project on the effects of cold on equine performance.
“This project aims to provide a scientific understanding of how cold temperatures impact horses,” Zötterman explains. “This knowledge is crucial for ensuring the well-being of these athletes.”
Revised Race Schedule
The entire race program at Boden has been rescheduled for Monday evening, commencing at 6:30 PM.This includes the qualifying race. ATG will offer V5 as the main betting option. Please note that some race start times have been slightly adjusted.

Shifting Gears: A discussion on Cold Weather horse Racing with Renowned Trainer Lars Jacobson
Welcome back to the barn, folks. Today we have a special guest, the highly acclaimed harness racing trainer, Lars Jacobson, who’s joining us to unpack the recent developments regarding the Boden races being postponed due to extreme cold.
Lars, thanks for joining us.
Lars: My pleasure. Always happy to chat about the sport we love.
(Host): Now,as we know, the freezing temperatures forced the Boden races to Monday, sparking a conversation about the delicate balance between competition and animal welfare. What are your thoughts on the decision to postpone the races?
Lars: Look, as much as we all want to see these races happen, prioritizing the well-being of the horses is absolutely paramount. These athletes are unbelievable, but they’re not robots. Pushing them to compete in such extreme conditions can be detrimental to their health.
(Host): Absolutely. The article touched on the limited research regarding precise cold tolerance thresholds in horses. Do you think we need more scientific data to make informed decisions about racing in extreme cold?
Lars: Without a doubt. We rely on experience and observation, but having concrete data would be invaluable. Understanding how cold impacts performance, recovery, and long-term health would enable us to make the best choices for our equine partners.
(Host): Engaging point. The article also mentioned the SLU project studying the effects of cold on equine performance. Have you had any chance to follow their work?
Lars: I’ve been keeping an eye on it. This kind of research is crucial for the future of our sport. Hopefully, their findings will provide us with the knowledge we need to ensure the horses’ well-being while still staging thrilling races.
(Host): Speaking of thrilling races, what are your thoughts on Romme going ahead with their races despite the weather?
Lars: Each track has its own unique considerations.Romme might be better equipped to handle the cold then Boden, or perhaps the races there involve less strenuous conditions. Ultimately,I trust the organizers are making decisions with the horses’ best interests at heart.
(Host):
That’s the spirit. Now, we have a few questions from our viewers. Sarah asks: “Do you think there should be established cold weather minimums for racing, similar to heat index limitations?”
Lars: It’s definitely a compelling idea.Setting clear guidelines could provide consistency and ensure the horses aren’t pushed beyond their limits in extreme conditions.
(host): Great point. And Michael wants to know your opinion on transporting horses in such blistering cold.
Lars: that’s another crucial factor. Truck trailers can get surprisingly cold, and long journeys in those conditions can be incredibly stressful for horses. Ensuring they’re adequately protected and monitored during transport is essential.
(Host):
Excellent insight, Lars. I think these are all critical points to consider as we navigate the complexities of harness racing in a changing climate.
Lars: I couldn’t agree more.Keeping the well-being of these incredible athletes at the forefront of our decisions is paramount.
(Host): Well said, Lars. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us today. We appreciate your insights.
