Mexican archers Aim for Individual Glory in Paris
MexicoS archery team has already made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the women’s team securing the nation’s first medal in the discipline. Now, the spotlight shifts to the men, with Bruno Martínez Wing leading the charge in the individual competition.
Martínez wing, along with teammates Matías Grande and Carlos Rojas, faced a tough challenge in the team event, falling to Japan in the round of 16. Japan’s journey ended in a loss to archery powerhouse South korea, who ultimately claimed gold. France secured silver, while Turkey took bronze, leaving China off the podium.
despite the setback, the Mexican archers have a chance to redeem themselves in the individual competition. Martínez Wing kicks off his campaign on Wednesday,July 31st,at 4:00 am (Mexico City time) against Cuba’s Hugo Franco in a knockout match.
Should Martínez Wing advance, he’ll face the winner of the match between El Salvador’s Oscar Ticas and China’s Yan Wang, a formidable archer who showcased his skills in the team event. Both matches will be broadcast live on Claro Sports in Mexico.
If Martínez Wing continues his winning streak,he could possibly reach the round of 16 as early as Sunday,August 4th.
Meanwhile, Grande and Rojas will also be vying for individual glory. Grande takes on Mongolia’s Otgonbold Baatarkhuyag on August 1st at 1:30 am (Mexico city time),while Rojas faces a tough opponent in Turkey’s Ulaş Tümer,who already secured a bronze medal in the team event,later that day at 7:43 am.

Maria garcia: It’s great to be here! It’s been thrilling watching this young team compete, and they’ve already made history for mexico.
Indeed! The women’s team secured bronze, a huge accomplishment. Now the focus shifts to the men’s individual competition, with Bruno Martínez Wing leading the charge. How do you rate his chances?
Maria garcia: Bruno is a talented archer with a strong work ethic. He’s shown great consistency in recent tournaments, and he’s certainly capable of making a deep run in this competition. However, the field is incredibly competitive, with world-class archers like Yan Wang from China and Ulaş Tümer from Turkey.
It won’t be easy, but Bruno has the skills and temperament to handle the pressure.
You mentioned Yan Wang. he was impressive in the team event, wasn’t he?
Maria Garcia: Absolutely! He’s a deadly accurate shooter, and he’s known for his composure under pressure. If Bruno were to face Wang in the later rounds, it woudl be a truly exciting matchup.
Martinez Wing’s first match is against Hugo Franco from Cuba. Do you see that as a tricky opening round?
Maria Garcia: Every archer in the Olympics is there for a reason. Franco is a solid competitor, so Bruno will need to be at his best from the outset.It’s a crucial match to win, as momentum is everything in these knockout tournaments. It will be captivating to see how Bruno approaches this challenge.
What advice would you give to Bruno at this stage, Maria?
Maria Garcia: I would tell him to trust his training, focus on his routine, and block out all distractions. the Olympic Village can be a whirlwind of activity, so staying mentally strong and focused is key. And moast importantly, enjoy the experience!
