Remembering a BVB Icon: Teddy de Beer
The atmosphere at the Dortmund stadium was heavy with emotion even before the kickoff between borussia Dortmund (BVB) and Bayer Leverkusen. The club took the opportunity to honor the memory of their beloved former goalkeeper, Teddy de Beer, who passed away on December 30th at the age of 60.
De Beer, who joined BVB from MSV Duisburg in 1986, dedicated his life to the club. After retiring from professional goalkeeping in 2001, he remained a steadfast presence, serving as a goalkeeping coach and, more recently, as a fan representative.
Stadium announcer Norbert Dickel, a former teammate of de Beer and a DFB Cup winner alongside him in 1989, delivered a heartfelt tribute. Dickel described de Beer as the “heart of the club,” embodying the values of passion, loyalty, and humanity. He spoke of de Beer’s ability to bring light into the world, even in the darkest of times, and acknowledged the irreplaceable void his passing leaves behind. Dickel’s voice trembled with emotion as he concluded, “Dear Teddy, we thank you for everything you have been for us.may you now rest in peace.”
The stadium fell silent as fans and players joined in a minute’s applause, honoring the memory of the club legend.
BVB’s official statement captured the essence of de Beer’s character: “Teddy was one of the good ones.On the pitch, but especially off the green lawn. A man you can touch.Deeply grounded. With his pulse, his heart and his full attention, he is always very close to people, a good, positive listener. Someone you always wanted to be around.”
De Beer was a part of nine of BVB’s most accomplished years, contributing as a first or second goalkeeper and later as a goalkeeping coach. His legacy extends far beyond his on-field achievements, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Remembering Teddy de Beer: A Legacy of Passion and Humanity
Joining us today is former Borussia Dortmund striker, Michael Rummenigge, to discuss the passing of BVB legend Teddy de Beer. Michael, welcome to the show.
Michael Rummenigge: Thanks for having me. It’s still a somber time for everyone connected to BVB. Teddy was a special person.
It’s clear from the outpouring of grief that Teddy de Beer was more than just a goalkeeper for BVB. Norbert Dickel’s tribute touched on this, describing him as the “heart of the club.” What made Teddy such a beloved figure?
Rummenigge: You remember the man beside you in the trenches. That’s what Teddy was. You could always count on him, whether it was a crucial save on the pitch or just a listening ear off the field. he was passionate about the club, about the team, about the fans. And he genuinely cared about people. That’s a rare quality, especially in professional sports.
BVB’s official statement also highlighted Teddy’s human touch, calling him “one of the good ones.” Is this something that comes through in the tributes pouring in from fans and former teammates?
Rummenigge: Absolutely. You see it in the stories people are sharing. Teddy had this ability to connect with people on a personal level. He was approachable, amiable, and always willing to lend a hand. That resonated with fans, with players, with everyone who knew him.
Stadiums are often places of passionate emotion, but the silence and later applause during the Leverkusen match were something special. What was going through your mind during that moment?
Rummenigge: It was a testament to the love and respect Teddy commanded. The silence itself spoke volumes – it was a moment of shared grief and reflection. And then the applause…it was like a collective heartbeat, everyone acknowledging the astonishing impact he had on the club and on our lives.
Teddy’s legacy extends beyond his achievements as a goalkeeper. He was a goalkeeping coach, a fan representative, and a true ambassador for Borussia Dortmund. How do you think he will be remembered?
Rummenigge: His nickname was “Teddy,” and it fit him perfectly. He was a man of warmth, kindness, and strength. He embodied the spirit of BVB – the unwavering passion, the connection with the fans, the dedication to the team. That’s how he will be remembered: as a true BVB legend, both on and off the pitch.
